With its complex narrative and wildly imaginative approach towards animation, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse proves you don’t have to dumb things down to have popular appeal. It’s an approach that resonates with a large and vocally appreciative audience.

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) proves it is still tough being a young Spider-Man and balancing high school, girls and keeping the parental units unaware of your superhero antics. He’s also enduring the absence of gal pal Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). When Gwen returns and seeks his help on a mission, it turns his life inside out.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The look of the film is unlike any other and uses a plethora of animation techniques and a robust palette of colours to dazzle the eye. It’s not just the visual presentation that is arresting, there are so many fresh ideas for the expansion of its characters. This is buttressed by a unique look by the animators and the approach of the voice actors.

The expansion of the multi-verse is impressive and requires some past knowledge of the first chapter in the saga, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Viewing that first film before seeing the new edition is an advantage in understanding the nuances. Even without prior knowledge, it is still a bold and inventive work that rewards those that can keep up.

After a long series of misstarts and wayward attempts to bring Dune to the big screen, David Lynch got his chance back in 1984 and the results were mixed, to say the least. Fast forward to 2021 and director/screenplay writer Denis Villeneuve gets his chance to bring Frank Herbert’s epic Science Fiction novel into the twenty-first century with this highly stylised take of life on the planet Arrakis.

Herbert’s 1965 tale was originally serialized in the American magazine Analog (the first issue was published in 1930) and more than paved the way for Star Wars. The similar plot points are abundant but where the original Star Wars movie played it cute and cuddly, Villeneuve’s vision is dark, foreboding, and quite monochromatic. Life is harsh on Arrakis even for the ruling class.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Things play out in a slow burn fashion with tension never far below the surface. After being given the rule of Arrakis, patriarch of the Atreides family, Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) does his best to balance his version of morality while ensuring he and his family’s future by keeping the production of Spice (a substance that imbues users with heightened vitality and expanded consciousness) at its peak.

Just like the effects of Spice, Villeneuve intends to expand the viewers’ perception of what life could be like on an alien planet and it’s not a pretty or comforting scenario. It features sights and sounds that may be new to our database but ones that get dragged down to our existing reality by a hierarchy system that limits life for all but the ruling class. Not unlike the one that has blighted things on earth for the millennial.

Writer/director Paul Schrader dwells in the world of gambling with The Card Counter. Driven by lead actor Oscar Isaac’s voice-over, it informs you about the details of an approach to gambling called card counting. It requires a mental focus and discipline that few are graced with. Isaac’s character William Tell is tightly wound and more than capable of that level of intent.

As the film plays out you discover there is much more to the story than just gambling. The details about Tell’s past put his actions into a completely different context and the revelations are not pleasant ones. Tell served time in the military and in prison for crimes committed while wearing the uniform.

Schrader’s pace is measured but he jolts you out of complacency with shocking scenes and increased aural dynamics. The volume and actions displayed leave little doubt to the horrors that existed in Tell’s life. These actions forced introspection but didn’t completely erase his humanity.

The Patriot Act has been used to justify horrendous acts against humanity and with little accountability. The Card Counter illustrates that survivors (on both sides) carry substantial scars that still impact the present and future. Presented as more a life lesson than mere entertainment, this work lets no one off easy.

To reclaim their bond they decide to cram Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester and the crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation. Their adventure across America takes them out of their element and into hilarious run-ins with their iconic cousin, IT, as well as many new kooky characters.

What could possibly go wrong?

The Addams Family 2 will be released in Australian cinemas January 6!
