Having always had a thing for films with clever people who always get underestimated, The Amateur was an experience worth having. Heller (Rami Malek) is a hyper-intelligent man who works behind the scenes at the CIA. His odd and quiet demeanour means that people have never really seen the quality underneath.

When his beloved wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) is tragically murdered, it brings something out in Heller that many never even imagined. Few saw the determination he possessed to avenge the death of his wife and he is allowed to train in the black arts. Even then he is still treated with a level of disdain that proves completely unwarranted.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Once in the field he uses this dismissal to his advantage. Being underestimated plays to his strengths and lacking the brawn only accentuates the power of his analytic brain. There are some bumps in the road and victims while not completely innocent are sweep up into the escalating violence.

In contrast to most stories of this ilk, he never loses his moral compass and the end when it does come is played out in an unexpected way. The underlying themes play to a healthy distrust of people in powerful positions and a few do get their comeuppance. The focus never leaves the thought that you can never judge a person by the obvious criteria and finding out the hidden depth of Heller is a satisfying adventure.

The cinema’s ability to successfully focus a spotlight on an important world event can be very hit or miss. Artistic license is often used as a catch-all phrase when the results come up short. Oppenheimer proves with the right intent and utilising a master’s craft to the fullest, that the work can inform, entertain and leave behind a vivid memory.

Julius Robert Oppenheimer was an exceedingly complex man and one many see as both a saint and a sinner. He was instrumental in putting the brain trust together for the Manhattan Project, The collection of minds that developed the first atomic bomb. When it was used twice to bomb the Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki it divided both the world and scientific communities.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Oppenheimer the pragmatist saw the bomb as necessary due to the race for its completion between America and Nazi Germany but as a humanist, he was conflicted. He didn’t trust the government’s implementation of the technology and always struggled with the balance between technological advancements and their use and abuse by humanity.

Christopher Nolan tells a powerful tale about a complicated man who was both rewarded and condemned for his genius. He was a man who felt great guilt about his part in inventing the atomic bomb and its subsequent use as a political tool by the world’s governments. He felt deeply for humanity and struggled under being seen as the destroyer of worlds.

The wait is finally over. In what may be one of the longest delayed-releases in cinema history (over eighteen months) the new Bond movie is finally arriving in Australian cinemas. Bringing the Daniel Craig chapter to a close, No Time To Die provides a rousing goodbye to one of the best Bonds ever. The action here is relentless, grand in scope and well worth the wait.

The tale this time out is a continuation of the storyline that has underpinned all the Daniel Craig Bond movies. When Casino Royal launched back in 2006, it introduced a much more visceral 007. It began at his inception and featured his first kill. Then throughout successive films, his character weathered huge loss and discord with the realities of his chosen profession.

It’s always been the threat to the world at large that powered his immense sense of King and Country and drove him back into active service. Even the desperate loss of his mother figure M didn’t prevent him from the inescapable call of duty. The stakes are very high this time and even after an almost crippling loss of love he is back and fully committed to stay the course.

There are no films in the entire 007 franchise that feature more ferocious action than No Time To Die and it’s a good thing as the actual story and events that drive the character’s actions are ever so murky. The big bad this time played by Rami Malek is never fully developed as the majority of the focus is placed on Bond’s ultimate fate. Long-time fans will find much to like here though and newbies can just revel in the amazing action pieces, beautiful locations and cool gadgets.

The police procedural is such an established film institution that bringing a new one to the screen requires that extra something to help it make its mark. The Little Things harkens back to an earlier age, where the interpersonal dynamics take centre stage and the action is pushed very much to the side. There is also some real star power to help with its gravitas.

Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto head an impressive cast, and the three play to their established strengths. Denzel is the stoic yet intense one, Rami delivers the emotion with a minimalist flair and Leto is his usual super creepy self. One wonders what dead animals he sent to the Big D and Rami this time out.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

// ]]>
// ]]>

The story involves an uncaught serial killer in the Los Angeles area and the victims that have been created amongst the living and the dead. Both the police and the families left behind are heavily impacted by the wanton acts of violence. Washington’s character also holds a deep dark secret that will be revealed in time.

With films of this ilk, the ultimate success or failure of the project is usually down to the effectiveness of the final act to give validity to what has come before. And with the deliberate pace afoot here, it’s even more dependent on a big finish. And while The Little Things sets up a compelling premise and the ending has a degree of depth, it’s just not strong enough to leave more than a minor impact.
