With the surprise reinvention of a comic Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, expectations were high on the humour front when iconoclastic writer/director Taika Waititi signed on for the sequel Love and Thunder. Bringing back early love interest Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) was also intriguing. With all this anticipation, how did things pan out?

The results are a mixed bunch, to say the least. The breezy Antipodean humour of the previous film is almost entirely missing. The jokes feel formulaic and forced and the hit ratio of laughs to groans is quite low. There are some funny bits like Thor’s naked butt rocking some tramp stamps and Russell Crow’s hammy appearance as Zeus that do help to spice things up.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

As oft times in these endeavours, it’s the lack of imagination in the script that keeps things tethered to the ground. It feels like they came up with a need for the film before the need to tell an engaging story. It descends into the trap that some Marvel films fall into of being product first and vehicles for solid storytelling second.

The list of under-utilised characters is long. Tessa Thompson as King Valkyrie and Christian Bale as the baddie Gorr leave little trace as does the almost entire cast of Guardians Of The Galaxy in the first reel. It’s a strange misstep from a brand that usually integrates its franchises so successfully. Unfortunately, lightning hasn’t struck twice this time.

In his latest film Creed, Sylvester Stallone returns as Rocky Balboa one last time (perhaps) in a surprisingly effective and very visceral boxing film. This time he exists outside the ring as he becomes the mentor to the illegitimate son of one of his greatest opponents.

It first must be said that the film features some extremely graphic faux boxing footage and is not for the weak of stomach. Secondly it dips quite often into populist sentimentality. Within those constraints however, it is a very enjoyable film and mumble as he might, Stallone holds his end up quite admirably.

Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) as Adonis Johnson is Balboa’s protégé and he really sells the role with his gym sculptured bod and obvious ring training. He isn’t your typical damaged goods either as he has an intelligence and civility that is usually absent in films of this ilk.

The film offers little in the way of surprises but is very entertaining and there are some very good choice of results that add to the viewing pleasure. Not for the faint of heart with it’s audacious boxing footage, it is still very entertaining.

The men and women of the dark suit are back after the franchise ran out of puff back in 2012 and it’s a more than welcome return. For fun and frivolous entertainment, Men in Black: International scores top marks. It also capitalises on the considerable chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, shown to such good effect in Thor: Ragnarok.

Director F. Gary Gray (The Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton) shows that he can still handle a special effects driven project and keep the human elements appealing. Even the CGI characters are giving substantial personalities, especially Kumail Nanjiani as Pawny. He is used to great comic effects.

The storyline is rather simplistic but is given a bit of depth by the origin story of Agent M (Thompson). There are the usual super cool gadgets and weapons and even a new set of wheels that will rival anything that Q can give to Bond. They have wisely included the newsreel footage of aliens masquerading as humans and the new choices are hilarious.

Few films other than the ones from the house of mouse can provide the kind of entertainment that is so well suited to all members of the family. Profanity free and with just the right amount of cheekiness, Men in Black: International should appeal to all.
