Malcolm McDowell stars as the deranged Emperor whose depraved acts include giving his horse political office, sleeping with his own sister and executing anyone who remotely displeases him. Gore Vidal provides the (uncredited) screenplay.

Fury of the Gods mixes mythical magic with an ethos that promotes family and the value of friendship. There is still the prerequisite amount of spectacle but the heroes here have doubts and less than absolute conviction. It makes them more relatable to a younger audience.

The story revolves around gods being released from purgatory and returning to earth to wreak havoc and plant the seeds of human destruction. The trio of baddies is led by Hespera played by Helen Mirren in a rather understated performance and a miscast Lucy Liu as Kalypso.

While there are several scenes that might be too intense for the very little ones, anyone in the double digits should be fine for this thrill ride. Its lighter stance makes for a more easygoing extravaganza than the more usual dour display of physiological dysfunction.

Broadbent is perfectly cast as the heart of gold Bunton as is the always impeccable Helen Mirren as his long-suffering wife Dorothy. His activities escalate until he is accused of stealing a portrait of the Duke of Wellington by the Spanish painter Goya.

Bunton is so unassuming and eccentric that even with a country-wide search for the missing painting, no suspicion lands at his feet. Several scenes highlight the task of living with such a man and Mirren is a joy to behold as the magnanimous wife. Her class shines through.

Getting the components correct for a true feel-good experience is not an easy task. It’s a fine line between motivation and maudlin and The Duke is an expert at keeping that balance just right. Don’t miss the opportunity to spend some quality time with this easy-going treasure of a film.

Producer/director Bill Condon has a history with McKellen with Gods & Monsters and Mr. Holmes and does little to rein in his eccentricities. Mirren gives as good as she gets and does so with a thinly veiled look of superiority. With the ad and press campaign for the film leaving little doubt that both participants have something up their sleeves, the real surprises don’t arrive until the last reel reveal.

The twist when it does come, will catch most by surprise as it comes way out from left field. It does however feel a little forced in the context of having so few clues given beforehand. Even with McKellen’s character seemingly having the surest hand during most of the movie, it gives very little information on the cause and effect of his past.

The main satisfaction inherent in The Good Liar comes from the act of watching Mirren and McKellen riff off each. This provides more delight than the revelatory moments inherent in the sting movie genre. As these two grow older, their rare moments together on stage or screen are ones to be cherished.
