Film as an art form never ceases to amaze with its ability to lift the human spirit, and never have these words been truer than with 2024’s A Little Something Extra. Even when it resorts to some standard film scenarios it still gets under your skin in the best possible way. By the film’s end, you will be emotionally invested.

The premise of two criminal types escaping apprehension after a bout of robbery by stowing away on a bus headed to a summer camp has been done before quite a few times. The difference this time is the bus is filled with young adults with disabilities. To say that they have colourful personalities is to undersell how engaging they actually are. Their quirks and the love they show towards each other is transcendent.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The crooks, in this case, a father and son find themselves drawn to this vibrant mob for different reasons. As those differences play out you quickly look past the camp members’ disabilities and just see them for their unique and engaging personalities. Even the ones with quite annoying traits will eventually wear down your defences and win you over. This transformation is very life-affirming.

Waving your agenda in an audience’s face hardly ever yields the desired results but capture those people’s emotions first and the life lessons can be transformative. A Little Something Extra starts as a fairly straightforward dark comedy but soon transforms into something more and its power to take you along for that ride and win you over is impressive indeed.

The spectre of Chadwick Boseman is ever-present as writer-director Ryan Coogler pays both heartfelt tribute to the late great actor and expands the universe of Wakanda. He also continues to write great parts for the kick-ass ladies of the hidden nation.

This is far and away one of the most character-driven Marvel films and it challenges the audience with a thoughtful but somewhat leisurely first few reels. When it kicks into gear, there are some well-paced and expertly executed action sequences.

By the film’s end, you are left with a feeling of the tremendous respect the filmmakers had for the man that was Chadwick Boseman and they do his memory proud. They have opened up the franchise with endless possibilities and it will be fascinating to see where they go next.
He became immersed in the life after his late father saved a local crime lord Pasquale (Gianfranco Gallo) by taking a bullet for him.

Carmine shows Pasquale he lacks the killer instinct and is sent away to run a money laundering scheme surrounding the running of a restaurant. While there Carmine meets Consuelo (Greta Scarano). She is a headstrong chef who used to work at the restaurant that was taken over.

They butt heads as their paths cross around town but soon she is hired as head chef as Carmine sees the running of this restaurant as a way of creating something that is his and giving him the ability to excel at something. These plans come undone and a debt is owed, to Pasquale.

Basing a movie on a video game is always a fraught proposition and Uncharted is the latest example of the good and bad aspects of that approach. It features elaborate set pieces that should have the ability to induce a sense of real tension in the audience but these moments of risk are so easily resolved it quickly dissipates any real sense of danger.

If this mirrors the action of actually playing the video game, then this approach makes a little more sense. As it is the film’s main momentum is built around the on-screen chemistry of its two male leads, Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg plays Victor Sullivan a self-centred veteran fortune hunter and Holland’s Nathan Drake is the starry-eyed newbie.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The two main female characters played by Tati Gabrielle and Sophia Ali are not given that much to do but they do use what little screen time they have effectively. They engage in several kick-ass fight scenes and dupe the boys with quite a number of double and triple crosses. Antonio Banderas also hangs around as the resident bad guy.

It’s mostly harmless fun but really does strain your suspension of disbelief to breaking point. I guess not being a gamer might be a disadvantage in your enjoyment of this film as all the gamers I know universally praise the Uncharted series as an outstanding video game. Too bad that level of engagement and excitement is lessened by its transfer to the big screen.

One of the strangest things takes place by the end of Sing 2. You get so invested in the goings-on that when the final resolve happens you cheer on the results. It’s often so easy with animated movies to have that feeling of distance because, in essence, the characters are a complete figment of someone (or many someone’s) imagination. Not being grounded in reality poses no impediment to getting emotionally involved this time.

Set in the world of the theatre, both big and small we get to know the crazy menagerie of animated animals that make up the cast of a work put on by Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey). A talent scout Suki (Chelsea Peretti) who works for super promotor Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale) sees the production and is unimpressed. This sets Buster on a path to eventually putting the musical on in the big smoke. A thinly disguised Las Vegas-like town called Redshore City.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

With an insane set design set in outer space and uninhibited by an actual budget limitation and with colours that almost sear the retinas it is visually impressive. The character animations and actions remain in the PG world and present no problems for younger minds to fully grasp. It does teach a few worthy lessons involving friendship and dedication to one’s dreams along the way.

Who would have thought that one of 2021’s most entertaining musicals would be comprised of animated animals voiced by some of Hollywood’s best-known actors and ready to break into song and dance at any moment? It’s difficult to not get involved

Catching up with this crowd-pleaser after missing the opening night screening was well worth the effort.
Getting the components correct for a true feel-good experience is not an easy task. It’s a fine line between motivation and maudlin and The Duke is an expert at keeping that balance just right. Don’t miss the opportunity to spend some quality time with this easy going treasure of a film.

Set during the horrors of World War One, The War Below tells of an audacious plan by the British military to free the loggerhead between the German and British troops stuck in the trenches on the Western Front. They intend to tunnel underneath the German trenches and plant bombs below them.

The story is built around the actions of William Hawkin (Sam Hazeldine) a family man and miner rejected for active duty due to the early onset of miner’s lung. His shame at not being able to serve drives him and his men to extraordinary lengths in the undertaking. There is also a critical look at the military’s penchant for staid and possessive thought in disregarding these non enlisted men’s heroics.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

5. JoJo Rabbit
With a gloriously absurdest approach to films both big and small, Taika Waititi provides something that is in short supply at the moment. Using Christine Leunens’s novel Caging Skies as the nucleus for his project JoJo Rabbit finds the Kiwi in great form. Leunens’s book about a Hitler youth who finds out his mother is harbouring a young Jewish girl in their house provides the basis for a Waititi screenplay that is rich in humour and subtext.
Click here to read our full review

4. Knives Out
There is something so satisfying when a dialogue based movie truly hits its mark. In the current environment that seems to favour action based films above all else, Knives Out stands out with its delicious dialogue and ever changing finger of blame. Having the writer also be the director, in this case Rian Johnson, makes the entire exercise feels more on point. Little seems diluted from what is a classic whodunnit.
Click here to read our full review

3. The Irishman
Never has Martin Scorsese made the life of a criminal look more mundane or realistic. As you would expect in a film three and a half hours long, there is a lot of down time for the criminals. The banality and tedium of a life outside the law is presented in an unapologetic manner. These eventless moments are starkly contrasted by some of the maestro’s most graphic violence to date.
Click here to read our full review

2. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
In Quentin Tarantino’s penultimate film (if he indeed stops at ten) Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, we see quite the departure. His other films feel like they were made by someone who lived through the fantasy of film, digesting genres and regurgitating his own. The new work reflects more on his upbringing in Southern California. It’s the world he grew up in. It feels personal and forms a love letter to the Hollywood he grew up around.
Click here to read our full review

1. Parasite
It’s been a very satisfying experience watching the progression of auteur Bong Joon Ho and his most recent work Parasite finds him in absolutely top form. The film works on multiple levels and is a sharp critique on class systems.

And some honourable mentions:

Best Australian Film:
The Nightingale

Best Animated Film:
Toy Story 4

Best Documentary:
Apollo 11

Best Performance:
Joaquin Phoenix – Joker

Film we where most surprised to enjoy:
