Be the first to meet Bing – a 150 pound Great Dane – making his big screen debut alongside Naomi Watts and Bill Murray in the heartwarming new film THE FRIEND.

Based on the best selling novel, writer and teacher Iris (Naomi Watts) finds her comfortable, solitary New York life thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor (Bill Murray) bequeaths her his beloved Great Dane, Apollo. The regal yet intractable dog immediately creates practical problems for Iris, from furniture destruction to eviction notices, as well as more existential ones. Yet as Iris finds herself unexpectedly bonding with Apollo, she begins to come to terms with her past, and her own creative inner life in this story of healing, love, and friendship.

Filled with charming moments, odd characters, and more Wesisms that you can shake a baguette at, The French Dispatch is all you could ask for from Mr. Anderson and then some. Pulling in almost every actor from his universe, it more than makes the long wait for its arrival seem irrelevant.

Made up of several chapters all told under the guise of being included on the pages of a fictitious publication called The French Dispatch, Wes gets to satisfy his stated claim of always wanting to do a series of short stories. He also gets to include another of his favourite storytelling mediums, animation, this time a hilarious car chase scene.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Not a single frame goes by without a look or feel of his unique art and it fills the screen with amusement even when the story being told loses its focus slightly. Not every story hits its mark completely and one, in particular, could have used some judicious editing as it runs a bit long.

Transporting one to a unique environment is one of cinema’s greatest charms and Wes Anderson is one of the industry’s most assured partitioners. As the final credits roll you are left with the feelings of having just visited a wonderful and enchanting world. One that pales in comparison to the reality we almost all live in.

There is something so appealing about getting lost in the world of Wes Anderson. It’s not just the oversaturated colours reminiscent of a lolly shop or the slightly bent but endearing nature of his characters that make them seem so much better than real. It’s the realization that we are all in this weird and wonderful thing called life together and that even when things invariable run off the rails, we still have each other to help us through.

There are a number of technical things that make up this wonderful landscape, not the least of which is Anderson’s ability to elicit a style of performance from his actors that rounds the rough edges off. There is still human emotion, even sorry, it’s just filtered through a prism that reflects more than just human angst.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

In his latest film, Wes has assembled a few of his usual suspects like Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman but has added a number of new entrants. Bruce Willis and Edward Norton take to this new understated world with aplomb and deliver performances that are so opposite their usual mega heroic presence, it’s a revelation. Frances McDormand is also fantastic and her bravery in allowing her age to show through gives hope.

The story behind Moonrise Kingdom is one of Anderson’s more slight tales but this just places more emphasis on the interpersonal dynamics and that is an area he has always excelled at. When the final credits roll you leave the theatre with not a care in the world and looking forward to utilizing your home DVD collection to its advantage by screening any one of his other works.

The chemistry behind a successful film can be difficult thing to define. It’s even more elusive when it comes to making sequels. Returning to the Zombieland franchise after ten years was always going to be a big ask and capturing the surprise success and charm of the original was never going to be easy.

With Double Tap, you have the same core actors, the same director and two of the same screenplay writers but it just doesn’t consistently hit its targets. Adding new cast members doesn’t really enhance things either. Except for Rosario Dawson, whose new character is well written and gets to kick serious ass.

The script also makes some strange choices in structure with two of the main cast members (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) leaving the action after the second reel and one not even returning until the film’s final conclusion. They have wisely let Woody Harrelson do what he does best and he enlivens most of the scenes he’s in.

The filmmakers have really tried to keep thing fresh and there are a good number of laughs along the way. It just feels like it could have worked so much better with a more well thought out script. It’s like the chemistry was slightly off and the recipe was missing those final one or two ingredients to make a really memorable meal.

This is going to end badly. With The Dead Don’t Die, writer and director Jim Jarmusch attempts to turn the zombie genre on its ear. With a pace that is far from brisk, no real zombie activity until almost 3/4 of the way through the film, tearing the forth wall asunder and focusing on a big battle for the throne, it’s a decidedly challenging view.

Who will come out on top of the battle for best dry line delivery in the business? In this corner the reigning champion, William James Murray and in this corner the new leader pretend, Adam Douglas Driver. With lines so dry you can practically see the dust in the air, the two go head to head. And the winner is? Sorry you’ll just have to see the film.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Set in a small town, Centerville, population 738. The pace of life in this minuscule American town is what you might call relaxed. As in nothing really ever happens but when Big Oil fracks the earth’s poles, both North and South, it changes the planet’s axis and sets off the impending zombie apocalypse.

Jarmusch doesn’t even attempt to make a current Zombie flick, in most ways this is some real old school s@#$, even to the point of using one of the best croaks in the business to narrate, yes Tom Waits channels his best wooly mammoth look and keeps things moving, sort of. Those looking for modern day thrills might be disappointed but for this scribe, the leisurely pace and toned down dialogue and action was utterly charming.

Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch and featuring the greatest cast ever disassembled. The film had the honour of opening the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday 14th May!

In the sleepy small town of Centerville, something is not quite right. The moon hangs large and low in the sky, the hours of daylight are becoming unpredictable and animals are beginning to exhibit unusual behaviors. No one quite knows why. News reports are scary and scientists are concerned.

But no one foresees the strangest and most dangerous repercussion that will soon start plaguing Centerville: THE DEAD DON’T DIE — they rise from their graves and savagely attack and feast on the living — and the citizens of the town must battle for their survival.

The independent filmmaker’s newest foray into genre film (after the western with Dead Man, Samurai/crime film with Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, and his vampire film, Only Lovers Left Alive) promises to be “the greatest cast ever disassembled”: Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, Selena Gomez, RZA, Sara Driver, Austin Butler, Luka Sabbat, Eszter Balint, Carol Kane and Tom Waits.

The Dead Don’t Die also reunites Jarmusch with many of his frequent collaborators including Director of Photography Frederick Elmes (Night on Earth, Paterson, Broken Flowers) and Editor Affonso Gonçalves (Only Lovers Left Alive, Paterson). The Dead Don’t Die is Jim Jarmusch’s thirteenth feature film and stands as not just a humorous and sometimes scary subversion of the genre (with a nod to George Romero’s seminal film, Night of the Living Dead) but also a tribute to cinema itself.

The Dead Don’t Die is in Australian cinemas October 24.
