Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, now balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.

Directed by Wan, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is produced by Peter Safran, Wan and Rob Cowan. The executive producers are Galen Vaisman and Walter Hamada.

The screenplay is by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, from a story by James Wan & David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Jason Momoa & Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, based on characters from DC, Aquaman created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger.

Joining Wan behind-the-camera is his sterling team of “Aquaman” artisans: director of photography Don Burgess (“The Conjuring 2”), production designer Bill Brzeski (“Jumanji: The Next Level”), editor Kirk Morri (“Furious 7”), composer Rupert Gregson-Williams (“Wonder Woman”) and music supervisor is Michelle Silverman (“Malignant”). Visual effects supervisor Nick Davis (“The Clash of the Titans” films, “The Dark Knight”) and costume designer Richard Sale (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, “Ready Player One”) also join.

Fast forward a number of years and the ensuing time has not been kind to the adult Prince. His body shows the hard life of a marauding warrior and his mind is still crowded with thoughts of revenge. Even meeting a hot blonde, Olga of the Birch Forest (Anya Taylor-Joy) does little to mellow out his ways.

He discovers the location of his uncle, Fjölnir the Brotherless (Claes Bang) and continues his unwavering direction of vengeance. This time taking Olga along for the ride. It’s all epic alpha male posturing and the women including Nicole Kidman as mother Queen Gudrún are given minor roles.

Beautiful but dimly lit throughout and often times spoken in native tongues (with subtitles) it takes substantial effort on your part to remain engaged. The magic elements lead to a number of striking scenes and this raises the visual experience. It’s a film best seen on the biggest and brightest screen you can find and rewards those with a taste for a good revenge yarn.

The film is period correct and set during the later part of the American Civil War. It examines the effects of isolation and a group dynamic during a prolonged period of conflict. These circumstances guide the actions of both the innocent and the guilty. It offers this information with little opinion and you are left to follow your our path into the character’s actions.

The cast is filled with some heavy hitters. Colin Ferrel reprises the Clint Eastwood role from the seventies version and is cast perfectly as he is out numbered and ultimately out done by a house full of Southern Bells. Nicole Kidman does what she does best, gets the mix of aloofness and concern just right and Kirsten Dunst successfully follows her great work in season two of Fargo.

Things unfold in an unhurried and leisurely rate. Far from off-putting, this succeeds in drawing you in as does all the work you put in actually following what’s happening on screen. It is however, well worth the effort.

Bombshell shines a light on one of these stories, in the case, it’s the detestable behaviours that took place at Fox News under the leadership of serial abuser Roger Alies, played here with suitable repulsiveness by actor John Lithgow. He is a repugnant man in every way but his ability to make millions of dollars for his overlords keep him in power for way too long. A few brave women came forward and ended his reign.

The main women in this action are played by Charlize Theron as the real life Megyn Kelly, Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson and Margot Robbie who plays the fictional Kayla Pospisil, who is a composite character representing many of the other women who were victimised, some who came forward, some who did not. The film is very effective at portraying these women as real people, not just victims. You feel for them and their story is more powerful because of that.

As more and more of these appalling stories come to light, it’s important to not be overwhelmed by their magnitude and frequency. Each one is no less horrific just because it followed another. Bombshell presents its tale in a way that should involve the audience and help them see past the sensationalistic elements of the story to the core of the problem, this may lead to the accusations being seen as lightweight but it’s important for the film’s commercial impact for it not to be too harrowing. This kind of activity in the workplace is a problem that we must all be aware of and act upon.

It does have quite a bit going for it other than just the source material. It looks great thanks to the customary brilliance of Cinematographer Roger Deakins and some of the cast are quite endearing. Nicole Kidman captures the fragile grace of Mrs. Barbour and Finn Wolfhard is charming as the young version of Boris. Unfortunately the less said about Ansel Elgort as the adult Theo Decker the better.

The story arc is decades long and follows a character named Theo Decker from childhood to adulthood. His life is one filled with tragedy and adult excess and the film’s non-linear structure asks for more clarity that the script can actually deliver. This causes some confusion as the characters and their actions are not strongly written.

The underlining story is an interesting one and with some judicious editing, the film could have come into much sharper focus. As it is, it has moments of interest and you begin to care about its protagonists, it just relies a bit too much on your patience.
