Arriving over a decade after the original stand-alone story, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish continues with the innate charm of the title character and adds a wider-reaching story to the mix. It also includes new versions of several childhood fairytale favourites.

Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and the three bears are joined by an over-the-top version of Jack Horner (John Mulaney) who adds both comic appeal and a sense of menace. Antonio Banderas returns as Puss as does Salma Hayek as love interest Kitty Softpaws. They are joined by a new character called Perro voiced by Harvey Guillén.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The story revolves around Puss using up eight of his nine lives and being chased by death, this time personified by a truly scary version of The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura). This leads to an epic journey to find the Wishing Star to ask for more lives. Along the way, there are some easy-to-digest life lessons.

Greatly expanding the swashbuckling feline’s universe, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish helps to put even more distance between him and the big green one. There is excitement and a real sense of peril, one that might even be a bit intense for the youngest members of the audience. The film is presented with an unusual-looking style of animation that adds to its uniqueness and appeal.

This summer, everyone’s favorite leche-loving, swashbuckling, fear-defying feline returns.

For the first time in more than a decade, DreamWorks Animation presents a new adventure in the Shrek universe as daring outlaw Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet.

Academy Award® nominee Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the notorious PiB as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws (Oscar® nominee Salma Hayek).

In their quest, Puss and Kitty will be aided—against their better judgment—by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén, What We Do in the Shadows). Together, our trio of heroes will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Oscar® nominee Florence Pugh, Black Widow) and the Three Bears Crime Family, “Big” Jack Horner (Emmy winner John Mulaney, Big Mouth) and terrifying bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura, Narcos).

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish features an all-star comedic cast that includes Oscar® winner Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone (Black Widow), Samson Kayo (Sliced), Emmy nominee Anthony Mendez (Jane the Virgin) and Tony nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Trolls World Tour).

The long-awaited follow-up to the 2011 Academy Award®-nominated blockbuster, The Last Wish is directed by Joel Crawford and produced by Mark Swift, the creative team behind DreamWorks Animation’s smash, The Croods: A New Age. The film’s executive producer is Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri.

The character of Puss in Boots first appeared in 2004’s Oscar®-nominated Shrek 2 and instantly became a global, scene-stealing sensation. Puss then co-starred in two other Shrek sequels and his solo film, as well as in multiple DreamWorks Animation videos and TV series. The Shrek and Puss in Boots films have collectively earned more than $3.5 billion worldwide.

Fitting in the Marvel Comics Universe between the films Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow provides a good deal of information about Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow’s back story. Scarlett Johansson is back in the tight leather and we get to drop and meet the family.

Sister Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), father Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), and mother Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) are there to provide the grounding for Natasha’s story. Pops Alexei is played mostly for comic effect as the Russian doppelganger of Steve Rogers, while sister and mother provide an emotional foundation.

The story involves a mad Russian named Drekov (Ray Winstone) and his plan to rule the world using brainwashed female sleeper agents. It is all gloriously devoid of common sense and makes for some absurdly fun escapist entertainment. Who doesn’t want to see ladies in snug apparel kick absolute butt and save the world at the same time?

Black Widow provides a great reason to get off the couch and make the effort to get back into a modern cinema. A place where the screen and sound are huge, the story ridiculously over the top, and the communal experience one that has been seriously missed. Give back a little to something that has given so much.

Universal Pictures has announced that global music icon Taylor Swift and legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber have collaborated on a new, original song written for Universal Pictures’ film Cats, based on Lloyd Webber’s record-shattering stage musical. The song, “Beautiful Ghosts,” will feature in both the film and in the end credits.

Cats, in Australian cinemas December 26, is directed by Oscar®-winning filmmaker Tom Hooper (Les Misérables, The King’s Speech), and stars Swift, James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson and Royal Ballet principal dancer Francesca Hayward.

In the film, the song is performed by Hayward, who stars in the role of Victoria. The version of the song performed by Swift, who plays Bombalurina in the film, will play over the end titles.

As part of the announcement, Universal today also released an exclusive, behind-the-scenes video documenting the creation and recording of the song and including an interview with Swift, Lloyd Webber and Hooper. The video can be seen here.

One of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, the stage musical “Cats” includes some of Lloyd Webber’s most indelible songs, including “Memory.” Lloyd Webber, Swift and the filmmakers were excited at the idea of introducing a new song for the film adaptation.

Lloyd Webber saw an opportunity to create a new signature song for Victoria, whose character has been expanded for the film. “When I first read the screenplay, the first thing I said was, ‘We have to have a song for Victoria,’” Lloyd Webber says. “Beautiful Ghosts,” he says, is now, “an incredibly important and central part of the whole film.”

For director Tom Hooper, the song exceeded even his high expectations. “What I couldn’t believe was the extraordinary beauty of these lyrics that Taylor had written,” Hooper says. “It was as if someone had come into the film I was in the middle of making and … had reflected back to me a profound understanding of what we are trying to do with the movie. It was utterly thrilling.”

A famous thief in his younger years, widower Brian Reader (Michael Caine), 77 years of age, pulls together a band of misfit criminals to plot an unprecedented burglary at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit.

The thieves, all in their 60s and 70s except for one, employ their old-school thieving skills to plan the heist over the Easter holiday weekend. Posing as servicemen, they enter the deposit, neutralise the alarms, and proceed to drill a hole into the wall of the safe.

Two days later, they manage to escape worth allegedly over £200 million worth of stolen jewels and money. When police are called to the scene and investigation starts, the cracks between the misfit gang members begin to show as they row over how to share the goods and become increasingly distrustful of each other.

Meanwhile, the crime has become public knowledge, and a frenzy of speculations begin. As details about the crime come to light, both the British public and the media are captivated, and the investigation is followed with bated breath around the world until the criminals are eventually captured.

Trying to line up the ingredients to start a successful movie franchise is a non-exact science. With the success of the Taken series of films (featuring the unlikely action star Liam Neeson) French director Pierre Morel now tries his luck with Sean Penn and his new film The Gunman. The film is based on the best seller by the late French novelist Jean-Patrick Manchette.

Standing in for Neeson this time out is the now craggy faced Sean Penn, who looks like he spent considerable time in the gym while preparing for this role. He plays Jim Terrier, an overseas mercenary with a dark secret and a love interest in Annie played by Italian actress Jasmine Trinca. Through circumstance they become separated but the tie of love warrants a future reconnection.

There are more notable moments of interest amongst the cast members like Javier Bardem sporting normal look hair or Idris Elba getting to test run the initials J.B. than there is in what is a very predictable script. The lack of discovery in the storyline is unsuccessfully remedied by a ramp up of excessive and graphic violence.

The Gunman does however have it moments. Little expense is spared with its overseas location shots so it looks great and the action scenes, while predictable are never less than exciting. When you add up all the pieces, you get a modern revenge scenario that will only become an institution with public support and this time out that seems a stretch.

Hot on the heels of Mirror Mirror comes this, the second Snow White film this year and, frankly, it’s nowhere near as fun. Snow White and the Huntsman adds a fashionable dose of seriousness and darkness to the tale but story-wise, it picks all the low-hanging fruit and struggles to maintain interest throughout its two plus hour running time.

The story is not helped by the casting of Hollywood’s blandest starlet in Kristen Stewart nor in Chris Hemsworth whose main claim to fame so far is a comic book character. In Hemsworth’s defence, though, he doesn’t have much to do bar getting angry and hitting things with a hefty weapon and somehow falling in love with the heroine (I’m still not sure exactly where in the story this happened but it did… apparently). After half an hour it’s abundantly clear this is going to be a generic royal-fugitive-reclaims-her-throne story and little surprises aside from the aforesaid blossoming inexplicable amour between Twi-chick and Thor.

The one shining performance in the film is Charlize Theron whose mad, desperate, evil queen is a magnetic presence. Her history is an untold story and thereby the most interesting aspect of the film. We almost feel sorry for her wretched, cursed existence, enduring her anguish for the sake of her youthful beauty – the only weapon possessed by a woman in a world ruled by men. While Theron is on screen the film has life but without her it’s dead in the water.

Few resources may have been poured into the story but not so a production design that is splendid, particularly the sequence in the fairy forest that seems inspired by the work of Guillermo Del Toro. The whole production seems to be channelling Lord of the Rings and Excalibur and mimics the grandeur of those films but they’re wrapped around a largely soulless story so in the end it counts for little.

The seven dwarves presented here are not unlike the vagabonds in Mirror Mirror – a bunch of rough-around-the-edge outlaws with hearts of gold and wisdom beyond their stature. It’s fun to play spot-the-well-known-actor with the dwarves that include Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, Nick Frost, Toby Jones and Eddie Marsan. And it must be said that the transformation of these actors to small stature is a remarkable application of special effects technology.
