With The Flash, it seems that DC has finally cracked the code. The excessive darkness that has blighted most of the earlier films has been lifted and the end result is a much more enjoyable experience. There are still dark moments but they don’t overwhelm the narrative.

The Flash character has always inhabited a world similar to that of Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man is so much as a somewhat normal teen who through an accident is given special powers. These powers combined with the challenges of the teen years make them more relatable. We’ve all had awkward moments during that phase of life.

Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) continues to be haunted by the death of his mother and the unjust incarceration of his father for her murder. He uses his powers to go back in time to undo that wrong and throws the space-time continuum out of whack. This opens up things for some great reveals and just a general sense of fun.

If DC continues with getting the mix of humour and pathos this correct they will be able to give that other house of ink a proper run for their money. Relatable characters and spectacular conflicts are a winner in anyone’s books. Also in line with that other companies’ products, you have to stay until the very end to catch a hilarious cameo.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents “The Flash,” directed by Andy Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”). Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film.

Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

“The Flash” ensemble also includes rising star Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon (“Bullet Train,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice“), Ron Livingston (“Loudermilk,” “The Conjuring”), Maribel Verdú (“Elite,” “Y tu mamá también”), Kiersey Clemons (“Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” “Sweetheart”), Antje Traue (“King of Ravens,” “Man of Steel”) and Michael Keaton (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Batman”).

Following one of the most successful film franchises in history (Harry Potter is currently ranked fourth all-time), the Fantastic Beasts films had a lot to live up to. Having the book’s author (J. K. Rowling) on board writing the screenplays has helped to give the movies a solid direction. Ditching Johnny Depp this time is an added bonus.

There are scenes in The Secrets of Dumbledore that could be traumatic for the smallest members of the family so beware.

The previous success of the franchise has given the filmmakers the budget to fully realise their vision. The special effects both real and digital are impressive and they will fill the young ones with a sense of awe. The final battle between Grindelwald (now played by Mads Mikkelsen) and Dumbledore (Jude Law) brings things to an exciting conclusion.

This latest chapter fits nicely with what has come before and adds to the strong catalogue. With an edge-of-your-seat sense of peril and imaginative expressions of magic, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore brings the trilogy to a rousing close. But then again if it makes big box office never say never.

For a lively discussion, fill a room with film geeks and ask them which medium the movies represent. Is it a director’s medium, a writer’s medium or perhaps a producer’s medium? The Perks of Being a Wallflower would be a great film to throw out there at times like that as it was written, directed and produced by the same person, Stephen Chbosky. And not only did he write the screenplay he also wrote the book the film is based on.

The film delves into the world of the outsider. Charlie (Logan Lerman) is a shy introvert just starting high school and to say he answers to the beat of a different drum is a bit of an understatement. Lerman plays Charlie as a complex character who seems to be submerging quite a few deep-seated emotions and anxieties. The film is very measured in its efforts to disclose the reasons behind these emotions.

He is soon befriended by a very engaging group of fellow outsiders lead by Patrick (Ezra Miller) and Sam (Emma Watson). This unlikely group bond in many ways and their forming camaraderie underpins the central story. Charlie also experiences the developing emotions of love as he falls for Sam.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

With a story like this, it is at times difficult to know how true to character the end results actually are as most less than popular people’s personal experience with the early days of high school were anything but a celebration of being different. The film is also a little unfocused as it crams a lot of sub text in the story without a lot of detail.

Seen as a pleasant coming of age story about an unassuming outsider, the film will win over viewers but the undercurrents that could have made it a more arresting experience are glossed over. It kind of makes you think that it was test marketed and found to be a bit too deep and cut accordingly. That or time constraints were imposed. I guess the medium discussion on this film might end up with the conclusion that it has become the medium of commerce.

Sometimes bigger is better. Having most of the main DC heroes in one film works out quite well in Justice League. The somewhat dour mood of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been lifted with this ensemble piece where humour is never that far away. Having The Flash provide the wide eyed wonder and dropping the funny lines lifts the entire film, even Ben Affleck is starting to satisfactorily inhabit the Batman role.

Elsewhere, Jason Momoa is actually able to make the Aquaman character seem cool and fast forwarding Wonder Woman’s arc allows Gal Gadot to act more naturally. It’s still at heart a comic book movie and this finds everything in overdrive, even the final battle is so over the top as to defy description. The CGI graphics are more moody and less photorealistic than other franchises and this gives the film its own look and feel.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

One of the few minor letdowns is in the character of the Big Bad and without giving away too much, they are just a bit too generic. The balance between the recruitment and formation of the Justice League is finely sequenced but the final reel and its big battle is the film’s least successful element.

Also be warned DC has now fully jumped on the Marvel bandwagon and make sure to stay until the very end so as not to miss the coda at the end of the credits.
