Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning brings the current series to a close and provides a rousing finish. Everything is ramped up to eleven and It pushes improbable to preposterous and remains overdriven throughout its entire 169 minute running time. It barely pauses for a breath. The main characters are firmly defined by now and show minimal growth. There is also a curious lack of humour shown as that break in intensity would have helped with the peak energy moments.

The story follows the worldwide threat of an AI-generated program called the Entity and it mirrors the current fascination and perceived danger and benefit of artificial intelligence. It doesn’t however expand much on the peril this program established in the series so far and focuses more on the human consequences. It also leans into the connection of its main players Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell and Hayley Atwell as Grace.

This is filmmaking at its most bombastic (and illogical) and deserves to be seen in its largest version, powered by its biggest and loudest sound system. Watching it at home will certainly be fun but will lack the impact and human interaction available in a public setting. Pure escapism takes precedence and is satisfying in the triumph of good over evil. Will this be the last time Cruise and company don the face masks and get the mission details from a smoking device? Only time and box office revenues will tell.

Substitute oil for spice and the fiefdoms in the books are not that far thematically from the ones that dot the Middle East in current days. The military aggression in that part of the world to keep American cars filled with dead dinosaur juice is also somewhat of a parallel. Herbert who died in 1986 was on to something.

Adding Director Denis Villeneuve to the cinematic versions of the books was an astute choice. No one in Hollywood can create more arresting environments on screen. His hard-won clout also allows him to hand-pick a cast that is representative of the most high-profile actors of the current time. This adds a substantial amount of sizzle as the cast reads like a who’s who.

The action in Dune: Part Two is intense and somewhat impenetrable for those who haven’t seen the first instalment of the series or read one of Frank Herbert’s Dune books. The film also demands the biggest screen and best sound system in town to fully deliver the impact it’s capable of delivering. The sound design by Richard King, (who also works with Christopher Nolan) is spectacular. It’s a true epic but one that is enhanced by a small amount of preparation.

Those big risks give the action on-screen a much more visceral impact and the wow factor is elevated substantially. This is also needed as the character development in this, the seventh time out is minimal. Cruise is such a recognisable celebrity that it is difficult to see him other than himself but in that context, he rarely disappoints.

The storyline of Dead Reckoning revolves around a hot topic in today’s news cycle Artificial Intelligence or AI as it is commonly known. The AI in this case is called The Entity and it represents a grave risk to all the nations of the world by being able to override any computer system and not just allowing your child to cheat on their term paper.

By now, you know what you are getting with the new entries in the Mission Impossible franchise. With Dead Reckoning Part One they have ramped up the action scenes in both intensity and duration. Even at its long running time of 163 minutes, there is enough frenetic action to keep you interested until the very end, which in this case is the halfway point with part two coming out next year.
