From the moment Andy Goodrich (Michael Keaton) is awoken from a deep slumber by a phone call from his now absent wife with the news of her admittance to a rehab clinic and plans to leave him, he begins one of the worst days of his life. This is quickly compounded by more bad news at work and the impending sole responsibility of looking after his young fraternal twins.

The knocks keep adding up and Andy is forced to reprioritise his life. His previous efforts were full of focus on his business and its successes with little left for his wife and children. He soon begins to realise his absenteeism has deprived himself and those around him of the joys that can happen in everyday life.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]> // ]]>
// ]]>
// ]]>
// ]]>
// ]]>
// ]]>
// ]]>

This is all a fairly standard setup, script-wise but what happens as things unfold is anything but by the numbers. Situations and their end results are presented in such a hyperbole-free manner that it places the focus on the kind of nuances that happen in a real person’s life. You can’t help but be drawn in.

Too many films end up being just entertainment fodder but then there are the projects that aim a little higher and leave behind a lasting impression. Goodrich fills your thoughts with a rich concoction of human emotions, life-affirming endeavours and reconnections. Kudos to all involved in this wonderful film.

With The Flash, it seems that DC has finally cracked the code. The excessive darkness that has blighted most of the earlier films has been lifted and the end result is a much more enjoyable experience. There are still dark moments but they don’t overwhelm the narrative.

The Flash character has always inhabited a world similar to that of Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man is so much as a somewhat normal teen who through an accident is given special powers. These powers combined with the challenges of the teen years make them more relatable. We’ve all had awkward moments during that phase of life.

Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) continues to be haunted by the death of his mother and the unjust incarceration of his father for her murder. He uses his powers to go back in time to undo that wrong and throws the space-time continuum out of whack. This opens up things for some great reveals and just a general sense of fun.

If DC continues with getting the mix of humour and pathos this correct they will be able to give that other house of ink a proper run for their money. Relatable characters and spectacular conflicts are a winner in anyone’s books. Also in line with that other companies’ products, you have to stay until the very end to catch a hilarious cameo.

Robo is back! When a film is popular long enough to achieve cult status it does strange things with your memory of said film. Going back and revisiting the original Robocop (in its ultra violent DVD version) was as much fun as I expected. Even reading the more than five pages of continuity and reality errors listed on IMDB did little to take the shine off of one of the great popcorn thrillers on its time (1987).

Now revisiting Robocop in 2014 is a plan fraught with risks and Brazilian born director/documentarian José Padilha hasn’t really helped matters by choosing some elements within the first version to revisit while casting aside others. His more moralistic take is interesting while his almost complete discarding of some of the eighties version’s most humorous elements (mainly the hilarious TV ads) have taken a lot of the fun out. Original director Paul Verhoeven’s biting social satire is sadly missing.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

For those familiar with the first version, a spot the differences approach has its charms, while newbie’s are left with a somewhat familiar dynamic. One where big business and its leaders are corrupt and the plucky young upstarts are not. Most of the gray in this story line however is washed out. There are some arresting visual moments and some action scene that filmmakers in the eighties could only have dreamed about but they are used rather predictably here.

What we are left with is a film that looks of its time with current state of the art computer generated graphics instead of dodgy but endearing stop motion animation and a seriousness that drains a lot of the enjoyment out of the ride. It’s still worth seeing as the overriding story arc is one of interest but its chances of being remembered fondly in the decades to come are slim.

As the Marvel Universe ever expands, it’s becoming often times predictable. Too many chapters of the franchise feel like long ads for new product. It’s always a pleasant surprise when a Marvel film departs from that formula. The first Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool spring to mind in that regard.

So with that in mind, it’s great to see Marvel relax the reins on Spider-man: Homecoming a bit and tell a story more character driven than special effects driven. The film’s lighthearted touch with an emphasis on humour makes it much more accessible than some of the recent overly serious Superhero films. It easily lives in the MU while comfortably standing alone. It even features a crazy credit at the very end of the film that sells laughs instead of product.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Peter Parker in comic book form has always been a geeky kid and the new Spidey, Tom Holland gets those nuances just right. He plays awkward as endearing. The story starts right after the Battle of New York and we get an early view of both Spider-man’s progression (further along than the radiated spider bite) and the political machinations that helped to create his new nemesis.

The thoughts of restarting the franchise again are rapidly lost as the charm and humour of this latest edition sweep you away. It gets the balance of action, storyline and character development just right and as such is a blast from beginning to end.
