This long-awaited origin story of how the most iconic characters in the TRANSFORMERS universe, Orion Pax and D-16, went from brothers-in-arms to become sworn enemies, Optimus Prime and Megatron, debuted its trailer on Friday April 19. The launch kicked off at 11:00pm AEST, Thursday April 18, with a live-streamed countdown showing the journey into space.

After one hour, the craft reached its peak at 125,000 feet above the Earth, revealing the trailer with a custom introduction video from our stars: Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry. The event was streamed from @TransformersMovie social accounts, The Paramount Pictures YouTube channel and co-streamed by Chris Hemsworth on Instagram.

Those early films were so endearing. Now fast forward to today and we have the trifecta duke out of monsters called Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The third member is the uncredited Mothra, guess the film title was long enough already? Into this mix comes the advanced state of computer-generated imagery, so unfortunately the balsa wood and paper have been set aside in light of more believable visuals and bigger targets to destroy. Did anyone say the Great Pyramids of Giza? They get reduced to rubble.

Making up for this lack of handmade mayhem, the filmmakers have used the art of CGI to create believable facial expressions on the faces of the Titans. No more unmovable rubber masks but visual emotions. This approach adds to the appeal. One emotion not shown however is regret. It doesn’t matter to them that there is the almost complete destruction of every manmade object they come in contact with during their worldwide battles. No monument no matter how famous or ancient is safe. This theme pays direct respect to those groundbreaking original auteurs.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may not be the Titan’s finest hour but it is a lot of fun and the homage paid to the character’s creators are heartfelt and tangible. In our daily lives, we come across the signs of the true monsters that exist in our world, so what’s not to like about spending a few escapist hours with these made-up ones? The ones that get to indulge in harmless wanton destruction while still being able to entertain us and giving us a short break from the actual horrors that plague this world of ours.

The set-up reads simply on paper but in practice continues to reveal multiple plot lines and characters until the very last moments of the film. It first focuses on Brad Pitt’s character Ladybug, a reluctant criminal who spouts a stream of zen-like sayings that wouldn’t look out of place on someone’s kitchen tea towel.

As things progress we meet an ever eclectic mob of killers and crooks and each has something new to offer backstory-wise. There is also a peppering of cameos that add to the variety. The violence is comic-book-like and increases in both gore and humour.

The pacing is supercharged with kinetic energy and ever-increasing in outrageousness and the two hours fly by. The final showdown when it happens brings things to a satisfying conclusion yet leaves you still wanting more. It’s been a while since a film of this type has left behind that feeling.
