Continuing with the Jason Statham retired assassin world tour, Shelter finds him alone again on a tiny island off the coast of Scotland. The island features a non-working lighthouse, a chess set he plays by himself and a dog with no name. He receives sustenance on the isolated isle via shipments delivered by a small fishing boat operated by an ex-military buddy and his young niece.

Through circumstance, he has to travel to the mainland for supplies and is ensnared by a secret government plan to use everyone’s phones and CCTVs to identify criminals, and this leads to the unwinding of his solitude. This breach also envelopes the life of Jesse (Bodhi Rae Breathnach), the niece of his army buddy. Together, they are forced off the island and to go on the run.

The subtext of a wide spread and illegal government spying effort adds a bit of substance to the plot, but the action mostly revolves around what drives most Statham projects: action and lots of hand-to-hand combat. Even with his advancing age, he is almost sixty after all, he still presents a convincing pugilist on screen. His inner core of morality is also intact.

Shelter succeeds in delivering what most of the British actor’s work excels at, a high percentage of action powered by a decent moral code. This makes him kicking the crap out of anyone that gets in his way, good, somewhat clean fun. The depth of the story is enhanced by an evil government ethos, and this makes for a clear definition of what is right and wrong.

There are a number of rules that govern the world of Jason Statham movies. Bad guys who can’t hit the broadside of a barn with any weapon, a hero with a depth of clandestine skills that never run out, few words but furious fists and a man who is successful at defying age and its limitations. As long as these rules are acceptable, a good time can be had by all those that agree.

This time, the story has a veneer of depth. Levon Cade (Statham) is a skilled construction worker who sticks up for the little man. His past military background is shrouded in mystery but clues are given. He is also a doting father who is homeless while he funnels all of his available cash reserves into the legal battle to keep custody of his daughter Merry (Isla Gie).

When his contractor boss Joe (Michael Peña) needs his help to find his daughter Jenny (Arianna Rivas), who has been kidnapped, Cage steps into his past to become a total badass once again. This all plays out like a poor man’s John Wick and thank goodness for the bad guys they didn’t kill any dogs as that would have probably brought out the nuclear option.

With truth in advertising losing relevance every day, it’s good to have something to count on when spending those hard-earned cinema dollars. With A Working Man, Jason Statham does as Jason Statham does and stays in the pocket with outlandish action and just enough meat on the bones to keep the story together, While not outstanding this auctioneer fits in well with his existing catalogue of work.

The end of the road begins.

Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast & Furious Saga, launches the final chapters of one of cinema’s most storied and popular global franchises, now in its third decade and still going strong with the same core cast and characters as when it began.

Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever.

In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Aquaman’s Jason Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.

Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son (Leo Abelo Perry, Black-ish) is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance.

The wait has been well worth it. Arriving on Australian screens almost a year after its original release date, Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre finds Guy Ritchie back in top form and using quite a few of his regular suspects. The mix this time tilts towards character arcs with lashings of action to keep things moving.

The action revolves around a plan for world domination via a secret device being sold on the black Market for ten billion dollars. This provides the opportunity for lavish sets, extravagant yachts and exotic locations, which are used to the fullest. The peril is minimised as this group is just so good at what they do so the emphasis is more on just pure fun.

With action and a musical approach that fits comfortably at the intersection of his past works like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Wrath of Man, Operation Fortune presents Guy Ritchie’s strongest effort yet to establish a James Bond-type franchise that could live and prosper well into the next few decades or even longer.

Few films in cinema today pack a bigger bang for the buck than the Fast & Furious series. And with the special effects driven approach on hiatus with the Bond franchise while it pursues a more character driven agenda, you need look no further than Vin and company for the most over the top stunts coming out of tinsel town. But as joyously exuberant as most moments of F&F7 are, they are also tinged with sadness.

Actor Paul Walker’s passing back in the 2013 was a very sad moment and happened midway through the filming of F&F 7. It caused a number of delays while they rewrote the script. Walker was a very well established journeyman actor and was well liked by all who knew him. This plays out sombrely in the latest film as the series has always focused on a group dynamic and championed the virtues of being part of an extended family.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The filmmakers have done a good job of staying true to Walker’s established character in the series and have successfully integrated the existing footage of Walker into the new story lines. There are only a few instances during scenes of hand-to-hand combat where it becomes somewhat obvious that there is a stand-in double being utilized.

The story line this time out follows the set up from the final scenes of the previous edition in the series, where the brother of the big bad that the group has just dispensed seeks revenge. This new character is played by action star Jason Statham and he looks to be a more permanent addition to the cast. Statham continues his few words but big fists approach with effectiveness.

Even with the solemn vibe present, the latest Fast & Furious is still a joyous thing to behold as all the cast and crew gleefully disregard the laws of physics and common sense, as they pull no punches in creating one of the most extreme automotive action films ever made. It goes way beyond the suspension of disbelief mode and enters the pure fun zone with a dedication that is an absolute thrill to behold.
