After the setback that was The Mummy in 2117, Universal are back on track with their effort to reboot their Monster Universe with The Invisible Man. With this year’s take on the 1933 James Whale classic, things are off to an impressive start. Writer/director Leigh Whannell of Saw fame, reels in his murder porn proclivity for a more implied and psychological sense of horror.

He very effectively uses modern sound design (and cinema surround sound) to provide audio clues that suggest an evil presence instead of relying on visual cues that would dissipate the dread by visibly identifying the intruder. It’s an approach the pays dividends throughout the film by asking more attentiveness from the audience.

Casting Elisabeth Moss as the female lead was also a good choice as she is unafraid to appear haggard and less than glamorous. Her degrading appearance helps to sell the strain of dealing with a seemingly unbeatable opponent. Her inner strength is dispensed at a believable rate and there are few false heroics.

Not many thrillers in recent memory have been able to sustain the tension until the final frame as successfully as The Invisible Man. It requires the audience to heighten their sense of sound, so catch it at the cinema with the best sound system. There are a few predictable moments but they do little to trample the thrill, a thrill that lasts until the very end.

What you can’t see can hurt you. Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss (Us, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale) stars in a terrifying modern tale of obsession inspired by Universal’s classic monster character.

Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer, NBC’s The InBetween), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge, Straight Outta Compton) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid, HBO’s Euphoria).

But when Cecilia’s abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

Being spoken of as being one of the worst films of the year smacks of gender bias. If The Kitchen was lead by a male cast it would not have copped as much grief as it has. It’s far from great but it’s not a total disaster either.

The establishment of the characters and story in the first act is fine, it’s the second act and final reel that are a bit wobbly. The end especially feels rushed. It’s as if the story would have been better served if presented as a high quality multiple episode television series.

Having women act in the roles traditionally inhabited by male characters challenges you to get past gender. These ladies can be as ruthless and scheming as any previous on-screen gangsters and often times seem the better business person.

Based on a DC graphic novel by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle, it’s interesting that the film’s biggest flaw is how under developed the characters are. Even for a film this short (102 minutes) there are crucial moments that feel rushed. It leaves you with the feeling of untapped potential.

Writer/director/producer Jordan Peele returns to fill us with fright and leave behind some food for thought with his new work, Us. Set in the summer in sun drenched California this time, the terror the Wilson family has to endure while on holiday is anything but sunny.

Life is good for the Wilson clan, so good in fact, they can afford to rent an expensive lakeside house to get away from it all. As they settle into their new digs, each family member shows their own unique personality. Everyone seems happy but Ma Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) seems to be quite fragile.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

She’s had a traumatic experience as a youth and it still colours her actions even in adulthood. Husband Gabe (Winston Duke) tries his best to counter this mood by being a bit goofy and less than serious most of the time. Their two children exist in their own little worlds, one buried in their phone, the other with head in the clouds.

This calm changes dramatically when a strange family parks themselves in the shadows at the end of the driveway. This starts a chain of events that will push the Wilsons to the edge of their sanity. There is always subtext in Peele’s movies and Us is no different but it’s difficult to expand on that without giving important details away. So I’ll leave you with just one clue, this wayward family might have to learn to slay together, to stay together.
