With the surprise reinvention of a comic Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, expectations were high on the humour front when iconoclastic writer/director Taika Waititi signed on for the sequel Love and Thunder. Bringing back early love interest Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) was also intriguing. With all this anticipation, how did things pan out?

The results are a mixed bunch, to say the least. The breezy Antipodean humour of the previous film is almost entirely missing. The jokes feel formulaic and forced and the hit ratio of laughs to groans is quite low. There are some funny bits like Thor’s naked butt rocking some tramp stamps and Russell Crow’s hammy appearance as Zeus that do help to spice things up.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The demand Aronofsky places on the audience is a mirror of the demands he placed on his cast members and the two main actors turn in outstanding performances. Portman’s excellence is not a great surprise (once she tackles a script worthy of her talents) but Mila Kunis is a revelation. Who though the TV actor could so effectively throw off the shackles of being cute and become so dangerous?

Even though it’s early in the new year, what better way to add that first entry to your best of list than Black Swan. It’s an experience that will resonate for a long time.

We have ten double in season passes to give away to Jackie!

Set in the days after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Jackie follows First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy as she fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children and define her husband’s legacy.

Boldly re-imaging events, acclaimed director Pablo Larraín moves back and forth in time between the immediate aftermath of the assassination, dreamlike flashes of Jackie’s happiest moments with her husband, her famous televised tour of the White House renovations as First Lady, and her most intimate moments alone, with her family and during confession as she struggles to come to terms with her loss. Larraín’s unique approach to filmmaking is accompanied by a remarkable music score by Mica Levi (Under the Skin), while at the centre of it all, ensuring her a place amongst the Best Actress contenders this awards season, Natalie Portman delivers a career best as Jackie – poised and steely in the public sphere, vulnerable and overcome with emotion in private and a commanding presence throughout.

Like nothing you’ve seen before, this beautiful, original and unflinching film goes beyond conventional biopic to galvanise the myth of an American icon.
