Louis (Stephan James) a young man with the mental age of a pre-teen lives with his older sister Delia (Genelle Williams) in the family home. Both parents are deceased and so Louis relies on his sibling heavily. He wakes up one morning and finds her dead in the kitchen. Although innocent he is charged and convicted of manslaughter.

After his release from prison, he returns home and thus starts his search for the truth. Untangling the details proves elusive as these secrets have been held for many years. The perpetrators of these unsavoury actions have felt the weight of their transgressions but as their lives have continued they have proven acidic but not fatal, yet.

This film is a suitable example of having all the pieces in place but the whole not being greater than the sum of the parts. There are strong performances by Stephan James, Paul Walter Hauser and Marisa Tomei but the pacing and fuzzy storyline prove problematic. In an effort to tone down the non-believability of over-stated action, the drama has gotten lost. The ending itself will divide audiences and this duality is reason enough to see it and make your own judgement.

The tale begins with Poirot in self-exile in Venice. He is retired and turning down all requests for his sleuthing services. Even though he is highly sceptical he attends a séance at the behest of his friend the famous writer Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey). When a murder happens during the event he is pulled back into service.

There is much to like about this film, it looks fantastic with an old-school approach to showing the actors in full-frame close-ups. Branagh’s double moustache is a wonder to behold and the lighting and set design fully sells the creepy aspects of the story. It’s classic who done it stuff.

With source material as rich as Christie’s books it would seem a certainty to provide the basis for a quality product. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case and there are quite a few film versions of her books that just don’t excite. An accomplished talent like Branagh side-step this dilemma and was a perfect choice to bring this seductive story to life.

All the gang is here, Holmes (Eugene Gilfedder), Watson (Anthony Gooley), Mycroft (Darcy Brown), Professor Moriarty (Bryan Probets), even the housekeeper Mrs Hudson (Helen Cassidy) makes an appearance. The plot revolves around Moriarty and his nefarious plans to create and use a biological weapon to control the social direction in regards to overthrowing the residing political party.

The set and staging are stellar and add a lot to the visual impact of the play. It utilises rolling set pieces with large flat surfaces to reflect imaginative projected images and animated bits. These are used to show Holmes’ thought process and establish times and places. There is one scene in particular, a chase around the streets of London that is dizzying in its effectiveness.

The themes and sense of peril mirror our current times in many ways and give the proceedings a sense of relevance and impact. Over a hundred years later these characters still resonate. With its attention-grabbing production and quality cast, The Mystery Of The Valkyrie is an entertaining night at the theatre and one not to be missed. Its limited run lasts until March 19.
