Early example, their usual approach to violence, where it is used almost as a summation of the randomness of fate is sidestepped by having one of the most graphic scenes of maleficence in their canon open the film. It is shocking and arriving so early on acts as a bit of a red herring as underlining all that happens afterward is a simple love story.

Actor Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood) in a real star turn plays Jamie, a young woman looking for love in mostly the wrong places. Her friendship with the conservative Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) underlines the direction the film takes and as they come to define their relationship, your interest grows.

This road trip film with a twist sees Ethan crafting a work that references the excesses of the seventies and the emergence of gay culture acceptance in the nineties in a thoroughly entertaining way. There are also interludes like the psychedelic scenes that bring to mind The Joshua Light Shows from the Fillmore East and West days that add to the irreverence that makes the Coen’s work so much darn fun.

Julius Robert Oppenheimer was an exceedingly complex man and one many see as both a saint and a sinner. He was instrumental in putting the brain trust together for the Manhattan Project, The collection of minds that developed the first atomic bomb. When it was used twice to bomb the Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki it divided both the world and scientific communities.

Oppenheimer the pragmatist saw the bomb as necessary due to the race for its completion between America and Nazi Germany but as a humanist, he was conflicted. He didn’t trust the government’s implementation of the technology and always struggled with the balance between technological advancements and their use and abuse by humanity.

Christopher Nolan tells a powerful tale about a complicated man who was both rewarded and condemned for his genius. He was a man who felt great guilt about his part in inventing the atomic bomb and its subsequent use as a political tool by the world’s governments. He felt deeply for humanity and struggled under being seen as the destroyer of worlds.

His alignment with the shoe company Nike and the contract he signed that gave him a percentage of each shoe with his name on it was groundbreaking and changed the industry overnight. Air provides a fascinating look at the human endeavour behind the scenes of this monumental event.

Matt Damon is Sonny Vaccaro, the Nike employee most responsible for signing Jordon to the brand. A brand at the time that was lagging in sales in the basketball shoe market. The film, through the soundtrack and bad fashion, sells the eighties era as does Damon’s dad bod and daggy dress sense.

The film is less about the game of basketball and more about marketing and the monetising of celebrity sports figures. Its take on a pivotal event in an industry that had never shared profit with its endorsees is illuminating. It is well-paced and concludes leaving you wanting more. It is recommended even if you have no interest in the sport.

Matt Damon is Sir Jean de Carrouges, a knight who marries Marguerite (Jodie Comer) to shore up his flagging finances. She soon bears witness to being sexually assaulted by Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) and sets into motion a conflict between the two former friends that ends in a duel with deadly consequences.

Splitting the film into three distinct chapters allow you the viewer to make up your own mind about the events that have occurred and highlights how male and female perspective can sway opinion. It also shows how hard the times were for women in the fourteenth century. Director Ridley Scott doesn’t hold back with the brutality and the final fight scene is very graphic in its savagery.

Male pride is shown to be the toxic entity that it is while the harshness shown towards women at that time is also engrained in the storytelling. The film feels like it’s from another time with its expansive sets and elaborate scenarios. After experiencing more than a few smaller and more personal films that are filling the cinemas at the moment, it’s great to have a big bold tale blazing from the silver screen.
