The cinema’s ability to successfully focus a spotlight on an important world event can be very hit or miss. Artistic license is often used as a catch-all phrase when the results come up short. Oppenheimer proves with the right intent and utilising a master’s craft to the fullest, that the work can inform, entertain and leave behind a vivid memory.

Julius Robert Oppenheimer was an exceedingly complex man and one many see as both a saint and a sinner. He was instrumental in putting the brain trust together for the Manhattan Project, The collection of minds that developed the first atomic bomb. When it was used twice to bomb the Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki it divided both the world and scientific communities.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Oppenheimer the pragmatist saw the bomb as necessary due to the race for its completion between America and Nazi Germany but as a humanist, he was conflicted. He didn’t trust the government’s implementation of the technology and always struggled with the balance between technological advancements and their use and abuse by humanity.

Christopher Nolan tells a powerful tale about a complicated man who was both rewarded and condemned for his genius. He was a man who felt great guilt about his part in inventing the atomic bomb and its subsequent use as a political tool by the world’s governments. He felt deeply for humanity and struggled under being seen as the destroyer of worlds.

From the inventive opening scene that acts as a series prequel, A Quiet Place Part II shows that writer/director John Krasinski has lost none of his touch with the suspense/thriller/horror genre. This film will keep you enthralled and agitated from start to finish albeit with more traditional methods in place this time.

Starting with a first reel filled with departures, the film drops the enigmatic approach of part one by letting the audience in on the story behind the alien’s first day on earth. Generating this amount of explanation early on isn’t the only change. The sound design is very different as well. There are few completely silent scenes and a more conventional approach is used to creating tension. Popcorn vendors will rejoice.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

After the opening, the story picks up right where it left off with the remaining members of the Abbott family forced to flee their farm. This turns the rest of the proceedings into basically a road movie, with the risk and reward ratio ramping up the excitement at inconsistent levels. In many ways, this allows the viewer more opportunity to view the story in a more nuanced way.

With the departure from the norm that the first A Quiet Place endeavoured to deliver, it was a solid decision to follow a more customary path this time. It does place greater reliance on character devolvement and the script delivers on this. Daughter Regan Abbott (Millicent Simmonds) becomes the hero of the piece and the fine actor is more than up for the challenge. Seen back to back the two films make a great duo.

John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle “Tenet.” Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion. The film also stars Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, with Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh. Nolan wrote and directed the film and also produced with Emma Thomas.

“Inception,” a 2010 science fiction action film written and directed by Nolan, who also produced the film with Emma Thomas, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a professional thief who steals information by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets. He is offered a chance to have his criminal history erased as payment for the implantation of another person’s idea into a target’s subconscious. The ensemble cast includes Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine.
