Set in the smarmy world of big money art, a world run by folks with even bigger egos, The Burnt Orange Heresy exists in the shadow of Alfred Hitchcock. It lulls you with pretentious prattling before it delivers a vicious blow to your senses and illustrates once again that humans are capable of extreme darkness in their thoughts and actions.

Claes Bang (TV’s Dracula) is James Figueras, a failed artist who now earns a crust by lecturing tourists about some of the world’s great art pieces. When he is hired by super art dealer, Joseph Cassidy, played with an elegant level of amorality by Mick Jagger to steal a painting for him, Figueras sees his entry into those rarified waters.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Along the way, his path crosses with Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki), a small-town girl trying to feel alive by a visit to the wild side. She gets pulled into his sphere and also helps him unlock a relationship with Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland) a world-famous and reclusive painter, who is Figueras and Cassidy’s intended target for the art theft.

Ultimately Figueras is ill-prepared for the consequences of his actions and his slow disintegration at film’s end is a highlight and leaves much open to the audience. Contrasting vainglorious speech with gritty human behaviours gives The Burnt Orange Heresy a multidimensional look at a rarified world filled with more villains than heroes.

Thanks to Sony Pictures we have three in-season passes to giveaway to The Burnt Orange Heresy!

Charming and ambitious art critic, James Figueras (Claes Bang), has fallen from grace. He spends his days in Milan lecturing witless tourists about art history. His only glimmer of hope is a new-found love interest, the enigmatic American, Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki). An opportunity strikes when he is contacted by wealthy art dealer Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger) who summons James to his villa on Lake Como and ask him to steal a painting from the legendary reclusive artist, Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland). Soon, James’ greed and ambition get the better of him, and he finds himself caught in a web of his own making.

Defying easy description, Ad Astra attempts to answer some big questions. Meaning “to the stars” in Latin, the work uses the emptiness of space to mirror the emptiness eating away at the insides of Roy McBride (Brad Pitt), a second generation Astronaut.

He has difficulty connecting with his fellow humans including his wife Eve (Liv Tyler). As a career military space traveler, he feels more comfortable in the isolation of space than on Earth. He also feels a deep loss as his father had disappeared long ago while on a mission to Neptune.

He escapes death while working on a transmission tower that reaches up to the edge of space after it is struck by a rouge electrical storm. This event leads him to a mission that will alter him forever. He is given top secret information that his father might still be alive and in some ways contributing to the events that endangered the tower.

Ad Astra plays out like a cross between Apocalypse Now and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Director James Gray is on record comparing it to Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness, the story that formed the basis of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 film. The outer space settings is used as a backdrop for an examination of the human condition. Why are we here, are there other living beings out is space, is there divinity or does the divinity only reside in ourselves?

This examination of the power of love takes the audience through a journey that is not always easy. It is filled with incredible sadness but also leaves one with a life reaffirming belief that love is more powerful than almost any other human emotion
.

Losing a loved one is impossibly hard to fathom but losing a loved one a little bit at a time is insidiously difficult. John Spencer (Donald Sutherland) is in the later stages of dementia and goes on one last road trip with his loving wife Ella (Helen Mirren). Her strength of character and love of John is palpable but she also has medical issues.

The film uses humour to help viewers from being overwhelmed with the sadness of it’s inevitable conclusion. Their’s was a life full of love, family and accomplishment. Not loud overstated events but the believable down to earth everyday successes that fuel a happy life.

Cinema is a powerful medium when its story is this well told by actors who’s experience and ability is second to none. It speaks well of this virtue that a story this sad can leave you so full of hope for the future with your loved ones.

When The Hunger Games was released in 2012, I was not too enamoured with it. It was representative of what I call the ‘Twilightification’ of movies – movies portraying conflict starring harmless pretty teenagers; with their perfectly mussed hair and designer scratches and bruises meticulously applied by the makeup department; their petty teen anxieties dwarfing the larger conflict at hand.

In days past, films like this starred rugged, blood, sweat and guts types like Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Running Man), Sylvester Stallone (Rambo), Rutger Hauer (Wedlock) and, most notably in this case, Takeshi Kitano (Battle Royale). Indeed, the whole teenage cast of Battle Royale were more convincingly unhinged and dangerous than the pretty nubile stars of The Hunger Games who looked like they could never harm anyone.

The sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, predictably followed with the ‘bigger is better’ formula by pitting our hero, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), with previous Games champions in another sterile death match.

Last year’s Mockingjay Pt.1 was met with derision from some Hunger fans claiming nothing happened in it. Actually quite a bit happened in it, it was just mostly devoid of the insipid sci-fi fantasy action faux violence of its attention seeking siblings; replaced instead with psychological drama and a political narrative that marked a distinct maturation of the franchise. I liked it. I liked it a lot.

Now Mockingjay Pt.2 balances the best of both worlds and brings the story to a fitting close. It includes Games-style action for the fans but it’s primary focus remains throughout on the story’s dramatic core and it’s associated political mechanic.

In conclusion, the film ends in a secure finality that admirably hints not a jot at any further instalments. It’s a film that is comfortable and quietly confident in the story it has told and it is prepared to leave it at that – a rare commodity indeed in today’s Hollywood.
