Incorporating moments of hand-drawn animation and teen angst alongside contemporary family dynamics sets the film firmly in the current day. Basing almost all the action around the three main female characters, Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan is also a welcome change from the usual testosterone-fueled fare.

The story is not a particularly strong one but the interactions between the three ladies give the work most of its charm. The only male actor with any real screen time is Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and his role is merely there as window dressing. Even the almost always-present threat of world destruction is delivered with a light touch. Heavy going it is not.

In another departure from the norm, the running time is only 105 minutes. This helps the film from overstaying its welcome. As blockbuster movies slowly creep back onto our screens, it remains to be seen if they will still provide the box office punch they had pre-covid. We have enjoyed a more indie-flavoured film approach as of late and that might have refocused audience expectations.

The series has always had a strong connection to the sense of the importance of family and that underlines what is in essence a very simple plot line. But then who drops into their local bijou for a deep and meaningful with this testosterone-charged franchise.

As far as action is concerned Fast X outdoes almost all that has come before and the set pieces are so over the top that they defy both physics and description. It delivers a level of bombast that will keep the young’s attention and the old’s head shaking in disbelief.

There are many surprises and revelations in store for fans just don’t look here for any clues about those goings-on as that would spoil the fun. Just be set for an action-packed 141 minutes of complete and utter motor madness where laws, any laws are just ignored suggestions. This is the kind of thrill ride best experienced on a giant screen and with a loud sound system.

The cast is chock full of Hollywood A-Listers including a man of the moment, Tom Hiddleston, the always popular Samuel L. Jackson (in a bad guy role) and even an attempt at some form of indie cred with Brie Larson, here getting her best Lara Croft on following her star turn in Room. The other A-Lister is that big bad monkey man, who this time out is big but not so bad.

The locations are exotic and the sets are stunning and the emergence of the big guy is played to full dramatic effect. Setting his early arrival amidst the shadows plays well to building the impact of his full reveal. It’s an interesting approach as it gives the film a pacing that engages until the final act as opposed to showing all early and leaving the audience nowhere to go.

The story is a very familiar one and it’s a nod to the filmmaker’s nous that they are so successful at breathing new life into a story so frequently told. Popcorn movies are big and often times bold but few of this ilk work as well as Kong: Skull Island.
