Reducing a long professional life down into a much heralded and singular event also pays dividends as it helps the film keep focus. The event in question was Dylan’s performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when he outraged the crowd by delivering an electric and rock-oriented set to the folkies. Little did the crowd on that night know what a pivotal event that would become in musical history.

Chalamet’s take on Dylan challenges you to even like the man, as his sullen nature and mistreatment of the women in his life are amply illustrated. His passion for expressing himself through lyrics and music is however the driving force of his life and it is presented in such a way as to illustrate that little else matters to him. In the modern day, this ethos seems cliche but at the dawn of rock music’s rise in popularity, it is revelatory.

The living and breathing version of Bob Dylan remains a contradiction. The legends of his life’s activities have added up to quit the tome and this celluloid take on an important moment of that life will only add to the depth of the story. He was important then and remains a seminal figure to this day. Now if we could just get him to take a few singing lessons.

Many say that this was also the perfect storm that helped to reinforce the toxic male energy that has blighted our society in the decades since. While this may be an oversimplification, it has had an undeniable impact on male behaviour since. As in all things that are created in an environment of excess energies, these clubs even though they started with the best of intentions became corrupted and changed to suit certain individual needs or desires.

In this context, the allure of criminality doesn’t seem so far-fetched and nowhere was this better exemplified than in biker clubs. The Bikeriders tells the tale of one such club that started simply but eventually ran completely off the rails. The key performances in the film by Austin Butler and Tom Hardy are underplayed to the point of narcolepsy and seem an attempt by the filmmakers not to fall guilty of ramping things up to the soap opera level of shows like The Sons Of Anarchy.

Driven by actor Jodie Comer’s narration (one that could rival Frances McDormand’s vocal heroics in Fargo), what starts as a brotherhood is doomed to be consumed by vice and greed. The level of understatement used to tell the tale makes the violence pop but leaves the audience under-informed as the almost complete lack of back story hinders true understanding. Historical context helps but it all falls short of providing the jolt needed to make this work a transformative experience.

After the opening WW 2 set-piece we jump forward in time to find Jones being awoken from a deep slumber by a neighbour loudly playing the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour to herald the arrival of the first men on the moon. This expensive use of a fab four tune successfully sets up the late sixties landscape, as does the slice-of-life scenes from New York City

Coming in contact with his goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) sets in motion a contrivance that features a Nazi scientist (Mads Mikkelsen) and his henchmen, a globe-trotting search for an accent artefact and a bonding experience for Jones and Helena. The missions are rather quickly accomplished as the story features more character development than just action sequences.

Having a woman playing the strongest role in this chapter might be hard for some to take but the new director of the franchise James Mangold has a lot of fun with Waller-Bridge’s performance. Ford nails the crotchety old man shtick and the ever-present stuntmen insure his lack of athleticism is not a hindrance. Getting in and out of trouble is as easy as ever for this rouge and fans of the series should have fun with The Dial of Destiny.
