Set in a distant future, The Wild Robot follows the existence of Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) a domestic service robot that gets stranded on a small island after an accident during transportation. The island is teaming with an overabundance of life forms, except humans. After powering up, Roz struggles to adhere to her programmed function to be of service.

Her software allows her to learn and eventually understand and communicate with the native fauna. After accidentally destroying a family’s bird nest she becomes the sole protector of Brightbill (Kit Connor) and also befriends an outcast fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal). She remains an outcast herself and this creates a bond between the three.

It speaks to the quality of the writing that these computer-generated characters are imbued with such emotional resonance that it is easy to overlook the simple sentimentality of the storyline. There is an undercurrent of pointing out the harm that humans have done to the planet which is typified by a scene showing the Golden Gate Bridge underwater with whales swimming above it.

Stunningly beautiful and emotionally powerful, The Wild Robot will pierce almost any hardened exterior and make a substantial impact. This is animation elevated into visually fine art and with classic storytelling that is simple and direct. This is one for the entire family.

With the box office juggernaut last year that was Barbenheimer, it seemed to have split the money-making side of the market into two camps. On one side was the oh so serious and on the other was a technicolour escapade that had a message. Both are valid and both have existed since pictures started moving but one type that seems to need some emphasis is the purely entertaining ones.

Into this somewhat split cinematic landscape comes The Fall Guy. This movie is silly, humorous and just plain fun. It’s also a real treat for fans of film with its references to classic movie lines and send-ups of Hollywood excess but its most endearing trait is just how good you feel watching it.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

When Audrey has to travel home to China to close a big deal she brings Lolo along and chaos ensues. The film pushes the boundaries and gloriously steps over the line time and time again. It makes you realise how conservative even shock comedies have become these days. This one really lets loose.

The two women pick up a few friends along the way and it’s great to see an almost all female cast get to step past the buddy comedy limits and show true friendship. That the film gets to indulge in such over-the-top antics just adds to the appeal.
