It is not easy to thrill a modern cinephile. The accumulation of people’s movie magic moments is large and it’s never taken more effort to raise the heart rate. Scream VI attempts the difficult by over-saturating the screen with more of just about everything.

Minutes in and the first blonde is dispensed with in a most bloody fashion.

The Munch masked marauder is portrayed as an even more relentless killer and this fills every scene with a strong sense of danger. And in traditional slasher film shortcomings, no one ever carries out the much needed double tap, so things constantly escalate.

Paying dividends for fans of the first five, Scream VI is a thrill ride that is packed with self-referential easter eggs and gratuitous murders. It’s also peppered with twists a plenty (some you’ll see from a mile away and some not). The final resolution is so over the top, it’s a perfect way to make a memorable chapter pause for the oversaturated horror fan.

With a take on youth culture that has spawned many imitators, Wayne’s World and Harold & Kumar immediately spring to mind, the original Bill & Ted film was a milestone movie experience. It had its sequels but they lacked the simplistic charm of the original effort. Now over thirty years later, it’s time for another pull at the bong.

First, it must be said that the initial appearance of Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) slightly jars the senses with how old they actually look but that soon plays into the film’s storyline. The movie years have not been kind to the duo and their successes and failures are laid out for all to see.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

It’s their daughters this time out that actually become the heroes of the day and Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea (Samara Weaving) have engaging energy together that adds a lot to the work. Their attempts to save the day provide the film’s most satisfying elements. When the girls recruit Mozart, Jimi Hendrix, and Duke Ellington for the house band, you know you are on to something sweet.

Bill & Ted Face The Music is unchallenging and borders on being a touch too simple, but it’s also the perfect film to counter these overly complicated times. Groove on Jimi jamming with Wolfie and Duke and pine for the presence of George Carlin, good fun is where you find it, just don’t look too deeply.

Black comedies don’t come any blacker than Ready Or Not. It’s dark, vicious, mean and oh so funny. If most new brides have one or two legitimate complaints about the new in-laws, then Grace (Samara Weaving) could write an entire book.

Little did she know the kind of family she was marrying into but she soon finds out on her wedding night. Observing a long held family tradition, they force her to play a game of hid and seek but this one comes with lethal consequences.

What makes the film so much fun is that Grace even with being scared out of her mind never loses her wise cracking sense of humour. She also doesn’t change into a retribution killing machine and spoil all the incremental fun. The suspense lingers and when she finally blows her cork, it’s quite the detonation.

In a nod to the anger towards the class system that exists between the rich and over privileged and the common man or woman in this case, it’s good fun to see the over monetised get their comeuppance. This happens with explosive effect. See this with the one you love as long as they are not your in-laws.
