The action is relentless and you best not have vertigo as the overuse of drone footage will turn your stomach into knots. There is also an almost complete lack of believability in the reality of what takes place on the screen. Criminal laws are broken by the characters and physics laws by the director.

The action is set during a Los Angeles bank robbery gone wrong. This leads to a chase scene that lasts 90% of the film’s running time. Its outrageousness brings to mind OJ and his Bronco and they end up trashing almost as many cars as John Landis did in the Blues Brothers.

Bay pulls out all the stops with a mindset of relentless activity and once you pack away your sense of disbelief you can have a good time. Jake Gyllenhaal gets to overact in every scene, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II gets to be the sensitive one and Eiza González gets to satisfy the Megan Fox factor. It’s all never less than big, dumb, and fun of fun.

Lucky Prescott (Isabela Merced, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) never really knew her late mother, Milagro Navarro (Eiza González, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), a fearless horse-riding stunt performer from Miradero, a small town on the edge of the wide-open frontier.

Like her mother, Lucky isn’t exactly a fan of rules and restrictions, which has caused her Aunt Cora (Academy Award® winner Julianne Moore) no small amount of worry. Lucky has grown up in an East Coast city under Cora’s watchful eye, but when Lucky presses her own luck with one too many risky escapades, Cora picks up stakes and moves them both back with Lucky’s father, Jim (Oscar®nominee Jake Gyllenhaal), in Miradero.

Lucky is decidedly unimpressed with the sleepy little town. She has a change of heart when she meets Spirit, a wild Mustang who shares her independent streak, and befriends two local horseback riders, Abigail Stone (Mckenna Grace, Captain Marvel) and Pru Granger (Marsai Martin, Little). Pru’s father, stable owner Al Granger (Emmy winner Andre Braugher, Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine), is the best friend of Lucky’s father.

When a heartless horse wrangler (Emmy nominee Walton Goggins, FX’s Justified) and his team plan to capture Spirit and his herd and auction them off to a life of captivity and hard labor, Lucky enlists her new friends and bravely embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to rescue the horse who has given her freedom and a sense of purpose, and has helped Lucky discover a connection to her mother’s legacy and to her Mexican heritage that she never expected.

Wright pulls remarkable performances from his entire cast. Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars and Divergent) shows a real star turn as the enigmatic title character and both Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx really sell the menace as they both play great criminal psychos. Headmaster Kevin Spacey keeps them all together with a solid mix of benevolence and belligerence.

Special mention should also be made about the car chase scenes. Without any noticeable computer generated imagery, this overused and tired cinematic device is presented as fresh and unique as it’s been in many years. This is down to the driver’s raw abilities and some amazingly staged choreography of the cars and their surrounds.

It’s fast paced but still slows down long enough for some effective character development. Few films this year will fire on all cylinders with as much assurance and energy as Baby Driver. Don’t miss it.

Casting Vin Diesel in the lead role pretty much sums up the approach to the dialogue and having Wilson, with his long history with visual effects on both film and video games gives a clear indication of the intent with visuals. The science of the film is so dodgy, it need not be mentioned again.

The story as it is, is very minimal and revolves around Diesel’s Ray Garrison / Bloodshot character being a recycled killer. His programming is supplied by Dr. Emil Harting (Guy Pearce) who gets to ham it up big time. Comic relief and the approval to mac out on junk food is provided by Lamorne Morris as Wilfred Wigans.

In these times of overwhelming reality, escapism is needed now more than ever and the disconnect required by this work on the rocky road to enjoyment is all encompassing. Load up with snacks, create and enter your own comfort zone and engage on a level of mindless enjoyment second to none. Just don’t forget to wash your hands afterwards.
