The director Luca Guadagnino (Challengers and Call Me by Your Name) poses an interesting question for this reviewer with his latest film, After the Hunt. Can you enjoy a movie that you feel absolutely no connection to? Will an amazing performance by an against-type Julia Roberts help with this conundrum?

Set in the overwhelmingly pretentious world of the professorial elite of Yale, Guadagnino lays down the challenge of finding anything parallel between you and the lives of these self-ordained aristocrats. If you live in the normal world and use speech that doesn’t require a dictionary to translate, the challenge to relate becomes even more elusive.

Along the way, there are directorial and cinematic decisions that provide an even bumpier road. Quick cuts before headlines are read and dropping the ambient light to near darkness during crucial scenes keep you on your toes. And throughout all this is Roberts’ performance, a marvel of balancing repugnancy and appreciation for her flawed character. This also takes place while a masterful job of make-up and lighting ages her decades right before your eyes.

By the film’s end, the question posed at first is no closer to being answered. But hours and even days later, and having the film and its eccentricities still occupying one’s mind, then this becomes the legacy. With so much disposable art being paraded as significant, is this approach actually a bad thing?

Maya Hawke voices Anxiety, the previously announced new arrival bound to shake up everything in headquarters and beyond. A bundle of frazzled energy, Anxiety enthusiastically ensures Riley’s prepared for every possible negative outcome.

Envy, voice of Ayo Edebiri, may be small but she sure knows what she wants. She’s perpetually jealous of everything everyone else has, and she’s not afraid to pine over it.

Ennui, who’s voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos, couldn’t care less. Bored and lethargic with a well-practiced eye-roll, Ennui adds the perfect amount of teenage apathy to Riley’s personality, when she feels like it.

Embarrassment, voiced by Paul Walter Hauser, likes to lay low, which isn’t easy for this burly guy with a bright blush-pink complexion.

Additionally, Kensington Tallman lends her voice to Riley Andersen, who’s about to begin high school. Lilimar was called on to voice Valentina “Val” Ortiz, a high school hockey player who everyone, including Riley and her friends, looks up to. Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan return to voice Riley’s mum and dad; Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green and Grace Lu provide the voices for Riley’s besties; and Yvette Nicole Brown voices Coach Roberts, who heads up a summer hockey camp. Joan Rubinsky (Amy Sedaris) and Rita Cohen (Caroline Aaron) run a theatre camp in upstate New York that has seen better days. Joan falls into a comp after an epileptic fit brought on by blinking stage lights. The camp them falls under the stewardship of Joan’s dropkick of a son Troy (Jimmy Tatro).

Troy’s continual cluelessness is played for laughs as is his inept interaction with social media. Elsewhere the camp’s main creative couple Amos Klobuchar (Ben Platt) and Rebecca-Diane (Molly Gordon) are squabbling over creative control and rampant egotism. The children in the camp and their parents are mostly left alone.

Even though this is an American production the humour in this film is less obvious and more ironic than most comic fare that comes from the States. It’s a welcome change of pace and one that should resonate more with adults than their young offspring.
