Maggie Gyllenhaal continues her ascent in the industry with her work on The Bride! As both the film’s writer and director, it’s clear that her vision is an entertaining one. Her ability to borrow from so many sources and still deliver something fresh and engaging marks a grand road ahead. She corrals a great cast (including her brother Jake) and brings out some wild performances.

We’ve never seen Jessie Buckley, as the Bride, so electric. She fills every scene with a strong sense of danger as her character transforms in a wild arc. Christian Bale, almost unrecognisable at first as Frankenstein’s Monster, fills the screen with an almost overwhelming mix of aggression and sadness. Annette Bening is also fabulous as Dr Euphronius, who is tasked with bringing the dead back to life.

Every scene has a purpose, and this kinetic energy powers the film forward throughout its two-hour running time. It constantly brings in so many other film references; it’s a film aficionado’s dream. The art exists in those moments, being presented as a tribute and not as outright thievery. Gyllenhaal even succeeds in delivering an ending that validates your care for the participants.

In a nod to Bonnie & Clyde, Sid and Nancy and many others, Frankenstein and The Bride embark on a crime-riddled romantic road trip for the ages. And it speaks to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s sure hand at the till and her obvious love of the cinema (past and present) that the final product feels so fresh and holds together so well with so many influences at play. This all equates to a rollicking good time.
The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!

A new trailer for 20th Century Studios’ “Death on the Nile” is here. This tale of passion and jealousy, which is directed by and stars five-time Academy Award® nominee Kenneth Branagh and features an all-star ensemble cast, opens in Australian cinemas February 10, 2022.

Based on the 1937 novel by Agatha Christie, “Death on the Nile” is a daring mystery-thriller about the emotional chaos and deadly consequences triggered by obsessive love. Kenneth Branagh, back as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot, is joined by Tom Bateman, four-time Oscar® nominee Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders and Letitia Wright. “Death on the Nile,” which reunites the filmmaking team behind 2017’s global hit “Murder on the Orient Express,” is written by Michael Green, adapted from Christie’s novel, and is produced by Ridley Scott, Kenneth Branagh, p.g.a., Judy Hofflund, p.g.a. and Kevin J. Walsh, with Mark Gordon, Simon Kinberg, Matthew Jenkins, James Prichard and Mathew Prichard serving as executive producers.

Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. Set against an epic landscape of sweeping desert vistas and the majestic Giza pyramids, this dramatic tale of love gone wrong features a cosmopolitan group of impeccably dressed travellers and enough wicked twists and turns to leave audiences guessing until the final, shocking denouement.

Filmed with 65mm Panavision cameras in late 2019, “Death on the Nile” transports audiences to the 1930s, recreating many of the locations that served as inspiration for Christie’s glamorous, high society thriller.

With audiences returning to cinemas, Disney has committed to an exclusive theatrical release for “Death on the Nile.” 20th Century Studios production president Steve Asbell says, “Ken’s sweeping, elegant vision for this classic story deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. We’re so proud of this film, our brilliant cast, and the stellar work that went into bringing ‘Death on the Nile’ to screen. We know that audiences can’t wait to experience Hercule Poirot’s next adventure, and we’re thrilled to continue working with Ken as he lends his masterful storytelling vision to the newest film in this celebrated franchise.”

James Prichard, chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., says, “More than 100 years after the publication of Agatha Christie’s first novel, her crime fiction works remain immensely popular and continue to be discovered anew by people around the world. I’m thrilled that Disney and our partners believe in this franchise, which has helped introduce millions of new fans to Christie’s classic works. We’re honored to be in business with Disney, Ken, and all who are dedicated to preserving the long legacy of these titles for future generations.”

Death on the Nile will be released in Australian Cinemas February 10, 2022!

Hope Gap tracks the unravelling of three lives, through stages of shock, disbelief and anger, to a resolution, of sorts.

It’s tender, it’s funny and above all, true. There are no easy answers, no simple paths to redemption, but in the end, it is a story of survival. A story of hope.

Hope Gap will be released in Australian cinemas April 9, 2020.

We live in exceedingly strange times. There was a time when governments put out a believable version of the truth and Hollywood product dealt with pure fantasy. Now movies and their version of world events feel more real that the fantasy peddled by many governments.

In The Report, we are informed about the horrific abuses of power that the CIA routinely engaged in with the treatment of its prisoners during their so called war on terrorism. The story is filtered through the actions of Daniel Jones (Adam Driver) who was appointed by Senator Dianne Feinstein (Annette Bening) to investigate and compile a report on these abuses.

After over five years of investigations, Jones’ report grew to over 6700 pages. It was highly critical of the CIA’s obfuscation of the truth in regards to torture and its effectiveness. With the transition of the presidency from Bush to Obama it was a story that could have been buried. Senator Feinstein made sure that it wasn’t.

It’s a gripping story that is told primarily by dialogue but jars the viewer by cutting to graphic scenes of torture that will have you questioning anyone’s ability to inflict such cruelty onto another human being. The horror stories from the evaporation of civil rights and the escalation of government aggression post 9-11 seem unending. Popular culture in both books and film now seem to be the tellers of more truth than our established institutions.

As far as Marvel origin stories go, Captain Marvel strikes the mother load. It tells of the origin of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) gives you some juicy back-story details on Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), details on the origin of the Tesseract, heck it even tells you about Nick’s cat Goose. You get all this information and a cracking good story to boot.

Strong female leads are rare in the MCU and this project is a great start at righting that wrong. The film even poses some challenges for the audience as the opening reel is not built on obvious details. Larson plays the Captain with both depth and humour. Her and Jackson riff off each other throughout and it’s a lot of fun to watch.

As in almost all origin stories, most to the screen time is spent in character development and the film’s generous running time gives an opportunity to build to something substantial. It’s also a time capsule and features a lot of cool nineties references and music.

If you’re planning on hosting a MCU festival and want to follow the proper running order of films, you will actually need to begin the proceedings with Captain Marvel. This late in the game producing something so essential is impressive.
