With the box office juggernaut last year that was Barbenheimer, it seemed to have split the money-making side of the market into two camps. On one side was the oh so serious and on the other was a technicolour escapade that had a message. Both are valid and both have existed since pictures started moving but one type that seems to need some emphasis is the purely entertaining ones.

Into this somewhat split cinematic landscape comes The Fall Guy. This movie is silly, humorous and just plain fun. It’s also a real treat for fans of film with its references to classic movie lines and send-ups of Hollywood excess but its most endearing trait is just how good you feel watching it.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

This is the best kind of escapist fare. The humour is there but the pacing never suffers from the build-up needed to land the big joke. Its laugh-out-loud moments are few but the smile never leaves your face the entire 126 minutes of running time. The casting is spot on and the on-screen chemistry between its two leads Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling successfully sells their relationship.

The film’s consistency is remarkable and director David Leitch (John Wick and Deadpool 2) shows his solid background in directing and stunt work. This is highlighted in the homage to stuntmen that plays over the end credits, it’s worth staying for. The Fall Guy is the kind of work you can recommend to just about anyone, even movie snobs stand a good chance of being won over.

While the film’s ruthless producer (Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham; Ted Lasso), maneuvers to keep the disappearance of star Tom Ryder (Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson; Bullet Train) a secret from the studio and the media, Colt performs the film’s most outrageous stunts while trying (with limited success) to charm his way back into Jody’s good graces. The film is executive produced by Drew Pearce, Entertainment 360’s Geoff Shaevitz and the creator of the original Fall Guy television series, Glen A. Larson.

In a heart-stopping display of precision and skill, Logan Holladay, stunt driver for Oscar® nominee Ryan Gosling’s character in Universal Pictures’ new 87North film, The Fall Guy, shattered the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for most cannon rolls in a car, achieving an astonishing eight and a half rolls during the film’s 2022 production on the beaches of Sydney, Australia.

This groundbreaking feat in blockbuster director David Leitch’s latest film surpassed the previous record held by stuntman Adam Kirley, who achieved seven cannon rolls during the filming of 2006’s Casino Royale.

The cannon roll, a classic stunt dating back to the early days of cinema, involves fitting a cannon-like apparatus beneath a car that shoots toward the ground. As the vehicle reaches a designated speed, the mechanism triggers and propels the car into a series of rolls. Holladay executed the stunt behind the wheel of a modified Jeep Grand Cherokee fitted with an external fiberglass body.

The Fall Guy, inspired by the 1980’s hit TV series of the same name, was shot in Sydney and is directed by filmmaker and former stunt performer Leitch, whose company, 87North Productions, is synonymous with adrenaline-fueled action in films such as Bullet Train, Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde.

The film, which stars Gosling as a stuntman and Emily Blunt as a film director, pays homage to the unsung heroes of the stunt community. Thus, the production prioritized practical stunts. “With The Fall Guy, I’m honoring my roots as a stunt performer,” Leitch says. “We wanted to deliver action that was true to the spirit of the stunt community by incorporating techniques that have become somewhat of a lost art.

The cannon roll is a classic stunt and was a must-have for this film. And since we were making a movie that honors the work of stunt performers, we didn’t just set out to achieve the cannon roll; we set out to break records and make a statement. Logan executed it flawlessly and showcased why he’s a standout in the stunt community.”

The Fall Guy releases in Australian cinemas April 24, 2024.

There is sadness in both remembrance and storyline but the emotional content feels respectful and expansive. Introducing an entirely new race of people and having them be both friend and foe helps to defy expectations.

This is far and away one of the most character-driven Marvel films and it challenges the audience with a thoughtful but somewhat leisurely first few reels. When it kicks into gear, there are some well-paced and expertly executed action sequences.

By the film’s end, you are left with a feeling of the tremendous respect the filmmakers had for the man that was Chadwick Boseman and they do his memory proud. They have opened up the franchise with endless possibilities and it will be fascinating to see where they go next.

Unique from beginning to end, Nine Days asks much from its audience. It is the kind of cinema that rewards those with a taste for a challenge. The material here is neither violent nor confrontational but requires an active approach to buttress its structure into solidity.

The scenario is as follows, Will (Winston Duke) occupies a lone house at the end of the world where he is instrumental in choosing entities to venture out and become human beings. The applicants are varied and each has both advantages and disadvantages to take into consideration before the final selection of just one.

Through a series of challenges, Will is able to gauge the potential of each. These tests are heavily coloured by a reference point of a life filled with trauma and resilience is heavily considered. Into this fray comes Emma (Zazie Beetz) whose unconventional approach to just about everything challenges Will’s overly structured world.

Nine Days tells a story behind an act of inception that is devoid of obvious religious connotations and it speaks to a man’s redemption. From an opening scene that feels mundane to its final immensely satisfying scene, it’s unlike almost anything out there. It also relies heavily on a powerful final scene to pull it all together and it’s great to say that the film’s creators have succeeded admirably in that task.

Writer/director/producer Jordan Peele returns to fill us with fright and leave behind some food for thought with his new work, Us. Set in the summer in sun drenched California this time, the terror the Wilson family has to endure while on holiday is anything but sunny.

Life is good for the Wilson clan, so good in fact, they can afford to rent an expensive lakeside house to get away from it all. As they settle into their new digs, each family member shows their own unique personality. Everyone seems happy but Ma Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) seems to be quite fragile.

She’s had a traumatic experience as a youth and it still colours her actions even in adulthood. Husband Gabe (Winston Duke) tries his best to counter this mood by being a bit goofy and less than serious most of the time. Their two children exist in their own little worlds, one buried in their phone, the other with head in the clouds.

This calm changes dramatically when a strange family parks themselves in the shadows at the end of the driveway. This starts a chain of events that will push the Wilsons to the edge of their sanity. There is always subtext in Peele’s movies and Us is no different but it’s difficult to expand on that without giving important details away. So I’ll leave you with just one clue, this wayward family might have to learn to slay together, to stay together.
