The Pope is dead, long live the Pope. This film highlights the magic of moviemaking by taking an event that would seem to be fairly straightforward (electing a new Pope) and fills the proceedings with intrigue, behind-the-scenes machinations, some real jolts to the system and an ending you absolutely will not see coming.

German director Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) masterfully weaves intertwining storylines to create an ever-shifting narrative.

Ralph Fiennes gives a powerful performance as Cardinal Lawrence. He is tasked with running the College of Cardinals as they gather in seclusion to choose the new Pope. He is still mourning the loss of the Supreme Pontiff but has to put his personal feelings aside. He is a modernist and puts his efforts into keeping a liberal Cardinal as the front-runner for the top spot.

Anyone thinking the Catholic Church and the Vatican in particular isn’t after all just a business will revel in the way the church is presented behind the scenes. The hierarchy follows the corporate structure and the grabs for power presented here would fit comfortably in a top-floor boardroom. The ever-changing power dynamic keeps you interested until the final extraordinary reveal.

In the latest case of an actor latching onto a role that just works for their acting style (or limitations in this case), Ben Affleck succeeds admirably as the man in the film’s title. Affleck’s minimal acting approach suits the role perfectly and director Gavin O’Connor’s sure and unobtrusive touch enhances the final product. An ability also on display with his previous films Warrior and Pride and Glory.

Affleck plays Christian Wolff, an autistic certified public accountant that also moonlights as an assassin. Wolff’s inability to really connect with other human beings adds a chilling reality to his actions and Affleck’s stoic portrayal feels accurate. Even the love angle is suitably underplayed.

The film’s structure mixes enough back-story to flush out Wolff’s beginnings but not so much as to rob the film of its forward momentum. It builds to a satisfying climax while never feeling forced and even succeeds with a few plot twists along the way.

Staying true to its character’s intentions while mixing in some great action scenes make for a most enjoyable cinema experience. As an added bonus the film also avoids the usual happy Hollywood ending.

There is a fine line when presenting these horror stories of abuse between creating on-screen victims that people can relate to and not just feel sorry for or ones whose stories are so outrageous, they just can’t be true. It’s this abhorrent grey area that has swallowed up so many innocent lives. It’s been a darkness that has needed illumination for a long time.

Bombshell shines a light on one of these stories, in the case, it’s the detestable behaviours that took place at Fox News under the leadership of serial abuser Roger Alies, played here with suitable repulsiveness by actor John Lithgow. He is a repugnant man in every way but his ability to make millions of dollars for his overlords keep him in power for way too long. A few brave women came forward and ended his reign.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The main women in this action are played by Charlize Theron as the real life Megyn Kelly, Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson and Margot Robbie who plays the fictional Kayla Pospisil, who is a composite character representing many of the other women who were victimised, some who came forward, some who did not. The film is very effective at portraying these women as real people, not just victims. You feel for them and their story is more powerful because of that.

As more and more of these appalling stories come to light, it’s important to not be overwhelmed by their magnitude and frequency. Each one is no less horrific just because it followed another. Bombshell presents its tale in a way that should involve the audience and help them see past the sensationalistic elements of the story to the core of the problem, this may lead to the accusations being seen as lightweight but it’s important for the film’s commercial impact for it not to be too harrowing. This kind of activity in the workplace is a problem that we must all be aware of and act upon.

Transcending the snapshot of the film presented by its trailer, Late Night is surprisingly meaningful. It is far more than just a simple comedy. It flushes out its characters with warmth and intelligence and still secedes in being funny. It delivers its political message with an inclusive ease.

Set in the world of host driven late night television shows, it uses some of the inherent hypocrisy of the genre as its foundation. It builds something from this base that is equal parts comedy and social commentary. It makes statements but is far from preachy.

Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is the much heralded and old school host who has lost touch with her audience and in some ways herself. She answers accusations of being anti female in her writing staff choices by hiring Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling), a slightly sycophantic woman who is sharp and unafraid to rock the boat. She pushes Katherine to expand her limited view.

Hats off to the talented Mindy Kaling for a screenplay that is never short of entertaining and socially relevant. Late Night cloaks its message in an appetising concoction of comedy and human endeavour.

After almost 30 years, a groundbreaking talk-show host suspects she may soon be losing her coveted seat on late-night television unless she manages a game-changing transformation in Late Night, the first feature film from Emmy-nominated writer and producer Mindy Kaling.

Legendary talk-show host Katherine Newberry (Oscar® winner Emma Thompson) is a pioneer in her field. The only woman ever to have a long-running program on late night, she keeps her writers’ room on a short leash ― and all male. But when her ratings plummet and she is accused of being a “woman who hates women,” Katherine puts gender equality on her to-do list and impulsively hires Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling), a chemical plant efficiency expert from suburban Pennsylvania, as the first and only female on her writing staff.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

With rumours swirling that Katherine is being replaced by a younger, hipper male host, she demands that the writers make her funny and relevant again. A lifelong fan, Molly is determined to prove she’s not just a diversity hire, but the one person who can turn her idol’s career around. Going against everything Katherine has staked her reputation on, she urges her to make the show more contemporary, authentic and personal, a move that could make Molly’s career ― or send her back to the chemical plant for good.

Late Night is directed by Nisha Ganatra from a screenplay by Mindy Kaling . It stars two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Max Casella, Denis O’Hare, Reid Scott, Ike Barinholtz, John Early, Paul Walter Hauser and Oscar nominee Amy Ryan.
