Lee opens in the South of France 1938, where Lee Miller, a former model and now determined photographer, vacations with her artistic friends.

With war looming, she follows her love, art dealer Roland Penrose, to London, where she struggles against the restrictions on female photographers at British Vogue.

She eventually secures her own US War Accreditation and heads to Europe alone. Partnering with fellow photographer David E. Scherman, Lee captures pivotal moments of WWII, including the liberation of Paris and the horrors of the concentration camps.

Directed by Ellen Kuras and written by Liz Hannah, John Collee, and Marion Hume, Lee showcases the resilience of women in a male-dominated field, featuring standout performances from Oscar winner Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, and Alexander Skarsgård.

Emma Stone is quickly becoming the Meryl of her time and she is consistently outstanding in this and pretty much every film she stars in as of late. Steve Carell is also perfectly cast as the buffoonish Bobby Riggs. Using the actual audio from the original match (recorded back in 1973) really does show how ingrained the male chauvinism was at that time.

The film plays out like a time capsule of the day and the attention to seventies detail is outstanding. Even including the old style film company logo at the start of the film. It’s these little details that really help to sell the era. As always with works of this ilk, the song selection is spot on and does a more than adequate job of setting the scene.

It’s something that a sports match that took place over forty years ago is so relevant in tone and statement to the events of today. You can watch this film and relate to it just as entertainment or see it as social statement and be more than outraged.

The film shares a storyline with the Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge and the 2004 America remake of the same name. At its most basic, it’s based on a house that becomes attached to and haunts all those that enter it. This time there are individuals whose connection only become apparent as things progress.

Not short of star power, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin and Jacki Weaver are just a few of the actors involved. Andrea Riseborough plays the lead character Detective Muldoon and she tries hard to hit most of the right notes to build the terror. The movie’s structure limits what she can do.

Building a scary experience on things jumping out of the darkness at you and drilling your ears with crescendo after crescendo of eerie sound design only takes you so far. After that there is a need for the story telling to buttress those feeling of unease. The Grudge succeeds at establishing an unsettling feeling but falls short of delivering the big scare.
