After being a film reviewer for many years, the surprise quotient unfortunately diminishes, so saying A Big Bold Beautiful Journey was a pleasant discovery is an understatement. This love story turns convention on its head in such an inviting manner that it makes you search your own life for parallel experiences. 

David (Colin Farrell) presents himself as a solitary being, suffering in quiet solitude while going it alone. Through the strangest of circumstances, he finds himself driving solo to a wedding in a rented Saturn automobile (an American brand that only lasted twenty-five years before becoming defunct). At the wedding, he meets Sarah (Margot Robbie), an outwardly bold person with hidden damage of her own.

Through another outlandish circumstance, the two end up travelling together, guided by the most personal of GPS devices. This adventure leads them to a series of doors that, once traversed, reveal moments from their past. The revelations within these worlds recast their thoughts and feelings about key moments in their lives. These moments become epiphanies.

The sign of a well-told story where humanism is at its core are those moments that arise from self-examination. Can I relate to this in a private and or personal manner? Does A Big Bold Beautiful Journey affect one in this way? It certainly did this over-experienced reviewer.

A stunned Padraic, aided by his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. On the casting front, things are uniformly effective with Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman more than holding up his end, he has brooding down to a science. Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle (AKA Catwoman) hits all the right notes and looks great in tight black leather while Colin Farrell is almost unrecognisable as Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin). Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon and John Turturro as the crime boss Carmine Falcone turn in their usual strong workman like effort.

The story is a fundamental one and the emphasis is placed squarely on the personal. Batman arrives almost fully formed and only mere hints are given at first on why he is so tortured. The billionaire side of his existence is downplayed and there is little focus placed on the Bat-gadgets. Even the Batmobile is understated and there is also a slightly different take on the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents.

Putting in maximum time and effort at forging a new path down a very well-trodden avenue has paid dividends. As long as the darkness both visually and metaphorically doesn’t bother you, The Batman can stand on its own and does well to establish an inviting new take on a character that has been with us since its inception all the way back in 1939.

The film is period correct and set during the later part of the American Civil War. It examines the effects of isolation and a group dynamic during a prolonged period of conflict. These circumstances guide the actions of both the innocent and the guilty. It offers this information with little opinion and you are left to follow your our path into the character’s actions.

The cast is filled with some heavy hitters. Colin Ferrel reprises the Clint Eastwood role from the seventies version and is cast perfectly as he is out numbered and ultimately out done by a house full of Southern Bells. Nicole Kidman does what she does best, gets the mix of aloofness and concern just right and Kirsten Dunst successfully follows her great work in season two of Fargo.

Things unfold in an unhurried and leisurely rate. Far from off-putting, this succeeds in drawing you in as does all the work you put in actually following what’s happening on screen. It is however, well worth the effort.

Bereft of luck and reduced to playing in bowling alleys and coffee shops, Bad Blake is in the twilight of his career and barely holding on. His alcoholic and stubborn ways have prevented him from enjoying the gilded life that many of his contemporaries are enjoying. This includes one of his earlier writing and performing partners, Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell).

The film’s believability is greatly aided by the fact that Jeff Bridges can actually play and sing. The songs in the film are also quite affecting and even if you are not a country music fan, their emotional impact will still be felt. Farrell also sings his own songs and has a surprisingly good singing voice. Maggie Gyllenhaal as single mom Jean Craddock is also very convincing even if the motivations for her romantic interest in Blake aren’t.

Throughout the film you get the sense that things are heading to a tragic finale and it’s to the filmmakers credit that they come up with an end that satisfies without being completely unbelievable, if fact the way that the end mirrors real life gives the film its most lasting impact.
