Not for the faint-hearted, Promising Young Woman succeeds at pushing its audience into uncomfortable places. Even without a single moment of gratuitous bloodshed (not counting the effects of a jelly doughnut), it is shocking with just the insinuation of violence. It is also a heartbreaking example of the caustic effects of grief.

Carey Mulligan is amazing as Cassandra, a young woman who has yet to recover from a devastating tragedy, an event that has altered the direction of her life forever. The mastery of understated nuance and comic timing is impeccable. You feel for her and mid-film when you experience the easing of her darkness, you rejoice.

This only adds to your horror are the vehicle of her release proves to be complicit in the event that set the misery into motion. It is a truly awful moment. Writer/director Emerald Fennell never lets up and soon delivers an even more appalling moment before the final resolution that will surely split vast members of the audience.

There is an overabundance of films that entertain but then they fade from memory at a rapid pace, Promising Young Woman is not one of those. By not overwhelming your reception of the film with off-putting and graphic violence, it reduces the distance from your life to Cassandra’s. It is this well-earned connection that makes the work so memorable.

Meeting your girlfriend’s family for the first time can be tough. Planning to propose at her family’s annual Christmas dinner – until you realize that they don’t even know she’s gay – is even harder.

When Abby (Kristen Stewart) learns that Harper (Mackenzie Davis) has kept their relationship a secret from her family, she begins to question the girlfriend she thought she knew. Happiest Season is a holiday romantic comedy that hilariously captures the range of emotions tied to wanting your family’s acceptance, being true to yourself, and trying not to ruin Christmas.

Before viewing The Disaster Artist, it helps to know a little bit about a film called The Room. That film consistently rates highly (or lowly) in film geek’s lists of worst movies ever made. It is a riot of bad acting, scattered dialogue and strange plots points that arrive and then disappear, never to be seen again. It has become a cult classic and features prominently on many indie cinemas midnight screening schedule.

Now using one of the most unintentionally funny films of all time as fodder for a film about a film has yielded comic gold. James Franco nails the role of The Room’s creator Tommy Wiseau (minus the middle age creepiness) and has never been more fearless or funny. It’s also a family affair and features his brother Dave as a co-lead actor.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The Room was beyond bad and feels as if it was alien in origin while The Disaster Artist feels Hollywood through and through. From its star laden cameos to the Franco brothers act, they both originated from different worlds but both generate huge laughs. The film also never devolves into snide commentary and treats Tommy Wiseau fairly.

Don’t worry if you are yet to see The Room as at film’s end there are some side by side scene comparison that put the current crazy in context to the fractured past. The Disaster Artist is a blast and should not be missed.

Many films suffer from too many ideas at play, The Lego Movie greatly benefits from this approach. It’s a film that works on multiple levels and one that is filled with so much humor and heart, you would be hard pressed to find anyone not taken in by its charms. It also takes great advantage in being able to incorporate movie icons not usually allowed to roam by their overlords of branding. I’m looking at you Batman (hilariously voiced by Will Arnett in this instance).

The underlying message is a positive one (believing in yourself and seeing greatness in everyday moments) but really even if the theme was completely saccharin, who could take that much offense when it is delivered by yellow plastic beings with hooks for hands!

The jokes fly fast and furious while the filmmakers get the mix of adult humor and childlike wonder spot on. There is also the fun of identifying the voice actors. The list includes Morgan Freeman, Jonah Hill, Liam Neeson and Channing Tatum to name just a few.

Few films released this year will be as guaranteed to entertain the entire family as The Lego Movie. Its wild imagination and chock o block approach never lets up and rarely skips a beat. Just a note to end, for families on a budget, you can feel comfortable in skipping the added expense of 3D screenings as the film works just as well in 2D.
