Michael B. Jordan does double duty, playing twin brothers in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. The two have grown up on the mean streets of the Deep South and during the early thirties, those were mean streets indeed for people of colour. They are flush with cash from a shady deal and hit town to set up a juke joint that caters to the local cotton-picking population.

They tap into their friend’s system and pull people from the local town to help with the various jobs to get the joint off the ground. There is a real sense of camaraderie among the crew but there is also no doubt the twins are fully in charge. They also enlist the help of Sammie (Miles Caton) the son of a preacher man who plays a mean blues guitar.

The film is shot with atmospherics at the forefront and the colours are warm and saturated. Music plays an important part as well and it is earthy and authentic. There is also a surrealistic edge to it and this includes a few jarring moments where the time frame seems to be very elastic. It plays fast and loose with the real world.

Once the opening night of the juke joint is underway the film transforms into a mix of social commentary and horror-driven peril. This includes the supernatural and legions of the undead. At times the film loses focus and the actor’s dialogue is a bit hard to understand. This leads to a feeling that the work is not completely hitting the mark but miraculously there is a coda that runs during the credits that does a great job of pulling it all together.

In his latest film Creed, Sylvester Stallone returns as Rocky Balboa one last time (perhaps) in a surprisingly effective and very visceral boxing film. This time he exists outside the ring as he becomes the mentor to the illegitimate son of one of his greatest opponents.

Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) as Adonis Johnson is Balboa’s protégé and he really sells the role with his gym sculptured bod and obvious ring training. He isn’t your typical damaged goods either as he has an intelligence and civility that is usually absent in films of this ilk.

The film offers little in the way of surprises but is very entertaining and there are some very good choice of results that add to the viewing pleasure. Not for the faint of heart with it’s audacious boxing footage, it is still very entertaining.

Both heartbreaking and enraging in equal measure, Just Mercy with fill you with a sense of righteous indignation. This true story is set in the US southern state of Alabama, a state never known for its liberal politics and it speaks to a severe miscarriage of justice. An innocent black man, Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx) is falsely convicted and sentenced to life in prison by the racist leaning local authorities. A judge later imposes the death penalty and McMillian was incarcerated for six years on death row.

It’s interesting to note that the main impact of the film comes more from the story than from the actor’s overwrought emotions. Michael B. Jordan as civil rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson and Foxx play their characters with a believable sense of restraint. Lawyers, especially, are taught to keep their emotions in check and Jordan resists the chance to show off acting chops to the detriment of the realism that is at play.

Some will feel that more thespian intention was warranted to fully engage the audience but then it would leave the realm of believable and dive headlong into conventional fiction overload. There is more than enough emotion in this overview of the woeful breakdown in the American judicial system this case represents. It also highlights the USA’s backwards and barbaric use of capital punishment, long after it’s been proven to not deter capital offences.

After enduring setback after setback, the film’s conclusion does provide some degree of redemption. Those that know history and stay for the interludes during the final credits however will be reminded that things change very slowly in certain parts of America (and the world at large). Reading the history of the actual case will also fill you with amazement of the egregious misuse of power and the outrageous disregard for legal protections.

A powerful and thought-provoking true story, “Just Mercy” follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs.
One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them.
