In that respect, it’s a success as the visuals are spectacular and the action sequences are very effective at getting across the physicality of that world. It’s some of the creative choices in the storytelling aspect that leave the work open for the audience to be taken out of the zone. One element that goes against its hyperrealism is having the warthog voiced by Seth Rogen break the fourth wall.

His jokes make reference to a modern world and this is jarring in the context of the timelessness of the story. In cartoon form, this approach to humour seemed less intrusive. Jump cuts between current events and backstory could have also been handled more smoothly. The story does pull at the heartstrings and you do get drawn in, it just is a bumpy road getting there.

These critiques however are set more in the adult world and the young ones will be oblivious to these distractions. Instead, they will revel in the wonders of the animal kingdom as created by the modern state of computer-generated visuals and their believability. The classic story of finding one’s way in the world and obtaining inner strength will always resonate with audience members.

In 1755, the impoverished Captain Ludvig Kahlen sets out to conquer the harsh, uninhabitable Danish heath, on which seemingly nothing will grow, with a seemingly impossible goal; to build a colony in the name of the King.

In exchange, he’ll receive a desperately desired Royal name for himself. But the sole ruler of the area, the merciless Frederik de Schinkel, arrogantly believes this land belongs to him.

When de Schinkel learns that the maid Ann Barbara and her serf husband have escaped for refuge with Kahlen, the privileged and spiteful ruler swears revenge, doing everything in his power to drive the captain away. Kahlen will not be intimated and takes up the unequal battle – not only risking his life, but also the family of outsiders that has formed around him.

After the opening WW 2 set-piece we jump forward in time to find Jones being awoken from a deep slumber by a neighbour loudly playing the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour to herald the arrival of the first men on the moon. This expensive use of a fab four tune successfully sets up the late sixties landscape, as does the slice-of-life scenes from New York City

Coming in contact with his goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) sets in motion a contrivance that features a Nazi scientist (Mads Mikkelsen) and his henchmen, a globe-trotting search for an accent artefact and a bonding experience for Jones and Helena. The missions are rather quickly accomplished as the story features more character development than just action sequences.

Having a woman playing the strongest role in this chapter might be hard for some to take but the new director of the franchise James Mangold has a lot of fun with Waller-Bridge’s performance. Ford nails the crotchety old man shtick and the ever-present stuntmen insure his lack of athleticism is not a hindrance. Getting in and out of trouble is as easy as ever for this rouge and fans of the series should have fun with The Dial of Destiny.

The film, which will be Harrison Ford’s final Indiana Jones adventure, premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 and opens in Australian cinemas on June 28.
