The new Frank Drebin (this time the son), played by Liam Neeson, gets almost all the nuances correct, even the deadpan look when a joke bombs (intentionally or not). The Priscilla Presley character is played by Pamela Anderson this time, and she gets the mix of naivety and gumption right as well. Paul Walter Hauser also successfully stars as the old Police Chief’s son

All that is needed now is a silly plot to contain all the shenanigans, and this one is cobbled together from a few existing films. Mix together more than a bit of Kingsman: The Secret Service with the existing tropes from the previous films in the franchise, and you have a suitable structure for mirth and merriment. That it delivers the laughs so well is a testament to the love for what has come before.

There is still something so intoxicating about sitting in a darkened room filled with complete strangers and laughing your arse off. It really is the glue that holds together a society such as ours. Not every joke lands, but the ones that do bring about public unity and an inclusiveness that helps to illustrate how much humour is needed in these times.

Set in Berlin, Neeson plays Matt Turner a high-stakes broker who has ignored his family pursuing profits so egregiously that they are looking for the exit. When Matt is guilted into taking his children Zach (Jack Champion) and Emily (Lilly Aspell) to school, what starts as an inconvenience turns tragic.

When he learns that his expensive ride has come equipped with the optional booby-trap bomb under the seat the day only gets worse. He is being blackmailed by an unknown criminal and forced to watch members of his work team get blown up for their trouble.

Stories like this have been done many times before and Retribution struggles under this weight. In its defence, its Berlin setting offers some fresh scenery to chew up and the tension does bubble along nicely. Neeson is less the action star and more the thinking man caught in the crosshairs type hero.

But everything changes when Hanson, an ex-Marine sharpshooter, witnesses 11-year-old migrant Miguel (Jacob Perez) fleeing with his mother Rosa (Teresa Ruiz) from drug cartel assassins led by the ruthless Mauricio (Juan Pablo Raba). Neither expects to find the once beautiful villa in such a state of disrepair… Renovations go badly, with father and son soon finding themselves at odds. Robert’s comical lack of DIY experience leads him to seek help from some colourful locals including the no nonsense Kate (Lindsay Duncan), an ex-pat making her living selling villas who quickly captures his attention. For Jack, the state of the house seems to mirror his search for memories of happier times with his mother.

He soon falls for Natalia (Valeria Bilello), a vivacious young Italian chef, who restores both body and soul with delights from her local trattoria – until the pair find their developing relationship in jeopardy from Natalia’s jealous and threatening ex-husband.

As Robert and Jack painstakingly restore the villa to its previous glory, they also start to mend their relationship. The future may now look quite different and surprise them both.

The 2008 film Taken recast Neeson as one of the big screen’s true bad asses and reenergized his career. This change was helped by the actor buffing up and having the innate physicality to play those roles with enough authenticity to be featured close up in fight and action scenes. No soft filter or distant set up shots were needed to hide the fact that almost all of the fight scene featured stunt doubles (i.e. Roger Moore in all the Bond films).

This time out, instead of being a shadowy ex-government agent, he’s a conflicted shadowy ex-mob hit man with still strong ties with his former employer. Through circumstance in aid of his own estranged son, he ends up killing the offspring of his former boss and from that moment forward, all hell breaks loose.

The ultimate success of films like this depend on a decent script and efficient acting and in these regards, Run All Night is a winner. The acting is top notch and the thespians chosen for their perspective roles are a great match. Of special note is Ed Harris, whose now craggy face fits the world weary Mob Boss perfectly. Neeson also get the performance nuances just right. This film is violent populist entertainment and is victorious in its mission to thrill and entertain.
