Being a spin-off from the original John Wick series and highlighting events from the timeframe between Part 3 and 4, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina uses some of the building blocks but not enough of them to carry a stand-alone feature. It features some amazing fight sequences but there is little to buttress the film’s impact story-wise.

Starting with part 2 they expanded the Wick Universe by creating a concept called the High Table with its arcane rules and extreme sense of justice. This has gone some way to supplying a backbone to the story arc and they have leaned into this in every film since. With Ballerina it barely generates a mention and it’s a sad absence because this work is very light on dynamics and story.

// ]]>

Ana de Armas is fine as the main character Eve and her ability in the fight scenes is engaging and exhilarating. But we learn so little about her life or her motivations. Those moments of exposition are sadly missing and would have given the audience a breather to help build anticipation for the next fight scene and provide a path to the person under the persona.

The fight scenes do stand out as Eve’s technique of using any and all available items as weapons is quite a departure from Wick’s modus operandi. No one can argue the motivation behind Wick’s explosion of violence but Eve’s is not as clearly defined. Setting almost every fight scene in dark surroundings also blunts the impact. Taken in the context of the Wick Universe, it’s a worthwhile view but as a solo work not so much.

Jack Black is back as your favourite Ailuropoda Melanoleuca or Giant Panda if you must. This series is a quiet achiever and it’s modern animation craft at its most consistent. It started with a strong message about overcoming your self-doubt and finding the inner strength you never knew you had and now uses that as a secondary plot point.

This time the main subject is not being afraid of change and overcoming a comfortable existence to find your better self. Visually the film contains almost everything the ever-advancing craft is capable of with fantastic use of colour and wonderful set design. Being based in the East adds another element of the exotic and this is used to the fullest.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

This is the most character-based outing of the series and relies heavily on the appeal of its two main voice actors Jack Black and Awkwafina. Black does tone down some of his more over-the-top tendencies but you still need to dig his shtick to get the most out of the film. Awkwafina also stays very much in her established persona. The rest of the cast features heavy hitters like Bryan Cranston, Ian McShane and Dustin Hoffman.

The term craft returns to mind as you experience Kung Fu Panda 4 and that is not meant as a slight. The amount of effort and the utilization of the many skill sets behind this project are very impressive indeed. As for the story, it’s consistent if not spectacular and finds a comfortable medium that will engage the adults as well as the younger ones. My favourite little one loved it.

For the first time in almost a decade, comedy icon Jack Black returns to his role as Po, the world’s most unlikely kung fu master, with a hilarious, butt-kicking new chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s beloved action-comedy franchise: Kung Fu Panda 4.

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (Golden Globe nominee Jack Black), is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

That poses a couple of obvious problems. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before he can assume his new lofty position.

Even worse, there’s been a recent sighting of a wicked, powerful sorceress, Chameleon (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), a tiny lizard who can shapeshift into any creature, large or small. And Chameleon has her greedy, beady little eyes on Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

So, Po’s going to need some help. He finds it (kinda?) in the form of crafty, quick-witted thief Zhen (Golden Globe winner Awkwafina), a corsac fox who really gets under Po’s fur but whose skills will prove invaluable. In their quest to protect the Valley of Peace from Chameleon’s reptilian claws, this comedic odd-couple duo will have to work together. In the process, Po will discover that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.

The film features the voice talent of returning stars Academy Award® winner Dustin Hoffman as Kung Fu master, Shifu; James Hong (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Po’s adoptive father, Mr. Ping; Academy Award® nominee Bryan Cranston as Po’s birth father, Li, and Emmy Award nominee Ian McShane as Tai Lung, Shifu’s former student and arch-nemesis. Oscar® winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) joins the ensemble as a new character, Han, the leader of the Den of Thieves.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is directed by Mike Mitchell (DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls, Shrek Forever After) and produced by Rebecca Huntley (DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys). The film’s co-director is Stephanie Ma Stine (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power). In 2008, the Academy Award®-nominated 2008 inaugural chapter, Kung Fu Panda, became DreamWorks Animation’s highest-grossing original animated film and launched a franchise that has earned more than $1.8 billion at the global box-office.

After the surprise success of the original John Wick, it was inevitable that a sequel would be on the cards and three years later we witness the arrival of the follow up, inventively titled John Wick: Chapter 2. This latest edition of Hollywood Murder Porn lacks some of the charm of original but surpasses it in both body count and visceral violence.

Keanu Reeves still nails the role and having someone with limited acting chops playing the role of the proverbially ‘talk softly and carry a big stick’ kind of guy works towards the film’s success. He also has another dog this time and it’s to the film’s credit that the pouch makes it to the end credits alive.

The film picks up shortly after the moment where part one left off (four days to be exact) and the two would make a great side by side movie marathon, if you can handle that much blood shed. All of the important living characters have returned and Ian McShane and John Leguizamo reprise their roles from the originall and are a more than welcome addition.

It must be said however that enjoying the film was hampered by the theatre’s sound system that delivered one of the most over the top loud and horrendously shrill sonic experiences ever endured in the cinema. It really was too much.

Picking up only minutes after the second film ends, this latest chapter of the John Wick saga is a crowd pleaser all the way. It ramps up the humour, gore factor and believe it or not even the body count. It also provides more information about the High Table and its mysterious ways.

After Wick (Keanu Reeves of course) runs afoul of the rules of the Continental Hotel by killing someone on its premises, a bounty of 14 million dollars is placed on his head, so every assassin in New York city is after him.
The popularity of the franchise has lead to an expanded budget, so its drops a few dollars and visits exotic locations and fills out its cast with the addition of Halle Berry and Anjelica Huston. They both play former allies of Wick and help him on his way. Berry’s character also adds some canine capers with a pair of badass guard dogs.

Parabellum does little to stray away from its murder porn core but the humorous moments are expanded upon as are some of the crazy methods of execution. For fans of the first two charters, there is much to like about this new edition. For newbies, it would be best to watch the origin story to get the full effect.
