The wait is finally over. In what may be one of the longest delayed-releases in cinema history (over eighteen months) the new Bond movie is finally arriving in Australian cinemas. Bringing the Daniel Craig chapter to a close, No Time To Die provides a rousing goodbye to one of the best Bonds ever. The action here is relentless, grand in scope and well worth the wait.

The tale this time out is a continuation of the storyline that has underpinned all the Daniel Craig Bond movies. When Casino Royal launched back in 2006, it introduced a much more visceral 007. It began at his inception and featured his first kill. Then throughout successive films, his character weathered huge loss and discord with the realities of his chosen profession.

It’s always been the threat to the world at large that powered his immense sense of King and Country and drove him back into active service. Even the desperate loss of his mother figure M didn’t prevent him from the inescapable call of duty. The stakes are very high this time and even after an almost crippling loss of love he is back and fully committed to stay the course.

There are no films in the entire 007 franchise that feature more ferocious action than No Time To Die and it’s a good thing as the actual story and events that drive the character’s actions are ever so murky. The big bad this time played by Rami Malek is never fully developed as the majority of the focus is placed on Bond’s ultimate fate. Long-time fans will find much to like here though and newbies can just revel in the amazing action pieces, beautiful locations and cool gadgets.

There are a number of different ways to relate to the new James Bond film Spectre. As a trip down memory lane, it’s a blast to identify all the references to previous famous scenes from the Bond lexicon, as for the filmmaker’s effort to turn the Daniel Craig era trilogy into a successful and emotionally satisfying quadrilogy, they have been less successful.

The feeling lingers that they started with an overall direction for the Craig films but ended up taking too many diversions along the way. Some of the reveals are far from the surprise the filmmakers intended. Also extending the realism and casting Bond as more human and less the gadget guy has worked with only half of the four films. This sombre realism worked well with Casino Royale and Skyfall, less so with Quantum of Solace and Spectre.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Few are unaware of the film’s basic synopsis after another nuanced series of trailers but suffice to say Tarantion molds both history and a take on slavery into a very modern tale. Jamie Foxx gets to become the ultra badass he always seemed capable of, Christoph Waltz continues to place focus on how criminally underrated actors from anywhere other than America actually are in big budget bonanzas and Leonardo DiCaprio chews up and spits out every line of his dialogue, which culminates in a ferociousness not seen from him in a long time.

Django is a long, wordy trip down the memory lane of one of modern cinema’s most iconoclastic auteur and it’s a joy to behold. One wonders where Tarantino will go next but rest assured we will have a long time to ponder it.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) leads a group of Jewish American soldiers on a campaign of terror against the Nazis. Raine’s squad joins German actress Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) and undercover British agent Archie Hilcox (Michael Fassbender) on a mission to take down Hitler himself. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own…

Bursting with “action, hair-trigger suspense and a machine-gun spray of killer dialogue” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), Inglourious Basterds is “another Tarantino masterpiece”.

Playing out more concept than story, Alita: Battle Angel has some fascinating ideas and a look that dips into the dystopian future theorised in films like Blade Runner and Akira. The characters are based on a Japanese manga series by Yukito Kishiro.

Christoph Waltz plays Dr. Dyson Ido, a Geppetto like character who finds some cyborg remains in a scrap heap that is formed by the castoff rubbish of an Emerald City called Zalem. This city floats above the squalor that makes up the area called Iron City. Dr. Ido soon uses these parts to build a complete cyborg that he names Alita.

Alita (Rosa Salazar) has no immediate memory of her past and starts her new life doing things teenagers do, like disobeying her parental units, hanging out with a rowdy bunch and falling in love with boys. As she learns more about her past, her life become more noble.

With an ending that makes the proceeding 122 minutes feel a bit like an extended trailer for part two, Alita: Battle Angel still wins you over with solid conceptualisation and strong character development. Director Robert Rodriguez has a solid track record and it will be interesting to see how he builds on this with episode two.

As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.
