Generally credited as being the best-known cinematic “Midnight Movie”, for decades now The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been a “Cult Classic” in every sense of the word.

Starring the inimitable Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon, the bizarre, over-the-top, and very unapologetic sci- fi/horror musical/gender-bending rock opera is a true, undeniable legend of cinema!

But it’s not just the film itself… far from it, even!

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is all about the fans… and more specifically, the audience participation! Rocky Horror is the first and only true audience partici- (SAY IT!)-pation movie. People yell back lines at the screen during the extended pauses between dialogue, dress up in costume and act out the film, and throw props various times during the film. Think of it as one part dinner theatre, one part drag show, one part roast, and of course, all parts insanity!

First is daughter Jennifer, who comes with her husband, Michael, and their 15-year-old son, Jonathan. Lily and Paul’s friend Elisabeth arrives, as does younger daughter Anna and her on-and-off partner Chris. Rebellious Anna has been elusive and out of contact with the family, a fact that clearly angers her elder sister.

As the weekend continues, old wounds come to the surface, driving some family members apart and others together. With both daughters increasingly conflicted about their mother’s plan, Lily’s hopes of a peaceful farewell appear to be under threat.

For fans of The Dude, this has to be one of the biggest disappointments ever as The Jesus Rolls fails on so many levels. It’s stilted, uncool and worst of all, just not funny. It flaunts a very uncomfortable anti-feminist approach and completely wastes the considerable charms of its female lead, Audrey Tautou, she of Amélie and The Da Vinci Code.

In the film, Jesus gets out of jail and embarks on a road trip that goes nowhere with his old running buddy, Petey (Bobby Cannavale). They steal multiple cars, rob people and collect Tautou and Susan Sarandon along the way. After that, the movie basically does nothing, except present disagreeable sex scenes with the two fine ladies mention above and with each other.

Originally finished back in 2017, it languished in distribution hell for many years, and rightfully so. See it to satisfy your curiosity about how wrong a decent idea can become when actor, writer and director are bereft of any good ideas and have nothing particularly important to say.

A box office failure upon initial release, 20th Century Fox re-opened Rocky Horror at midnight in April 1976 and it found its audience.

People began attending the screenings in costume, and shouting out lines in response to the film dialogue. From this, the concept of a ‘floorshow cast’ began. Over the years, this idea has developed with groups now performing during the screenings. In character and in costume, the casts perform a live lip-synch floorshow on the stage in front of the screen whilst the film plays.

Now, over forty years later, audience members are still flocking to screenings of the film all over the world. Nothing can beat seeing the film with a live cast in costume, and with audience members singing-along and shouting audience participation lines in time with the film.

What the sequel lacks in character development, is more than made up for in sheer craziness. You really have to see the film to experience how over the top a current generation comedy can be. It’s also great to see that the women in the film are the comic legends and almost all the male cast members play the straight man in this comic stew.

The basic story line is one of the connections between mothers and daughters and each of these relationships strike a different tone. It’s this variety that makes it relatable to a wide selection of the audience. If nothing else, it makes you happy your own relationship with your parents was never quite this dysfunctional.

Seen back to back, the two films play well together. Bad Moms 2 will definitely be added to many people’s list of unconventional Christmas films that will be watched every holiday season. It fits nicely alongside other non traditional fare like Rare Export and the original Bad Santa and Die Hard.
