When Kingsman: The Secret Service arrived on movie screens in 2014, it heralded the arrival of something fresh. Director Matthew Vaughn left his hyper-realistic projects like Layer Cake behind to indulge in a bit of pure escapism. His use of over-saturated colours was matched by over-stylised and comic violence that was backdropped by a storyline every bit as outlandish.

With his new spy yarn Argylle, Vaughn returns to the fold with all those idiosyncrasies intact. It’s a tale of world domination delivered with a sly wink and an ever-changing landscape of who is good and who is bad and what their true intentions are proven to be. Kind of like John le Carré on acid, really strong acid.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

Unlike the two previous films Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingman: The Golden Circle, this chapter is almost entirely gadget-free and focuses on the protagonists that end up being the early members of the agency. It also has a lot of fun with historical figures like Grigori Rasputin (Rhys Ifans) and King George, Kaiser Wilhelm, and Tsar Nicholas (all played by Tom Hollander). Ifans’ take on Rasputin is, particularly over the top.

The movie misses the chance to introduce some funky steampunk weapons and hardware but makes up for it by utilising the same hyper-real look and feel of the first two films. This one also tugs the heartstrings in a way the first two did not with their cartoon approach to the storytelling. This should handily restart the franchise from its inception on.

All of the over the top tendencies are not only keep intact from the first film but with a bigger budget and more ambition, they are ramped up considerably. Even suspected dead are revived. Oh and for those wondering, the extremely juvenile bouts of humour and comic book special effects are revisited extensively.

If you loved the first Kingsman, you will have no issues with the second but for the newbies, this is a world where anything goes. It stays true to the level of unsophisticated comic book humour with its sense of grandiosity. It fires fun square into the heart of the young and young at heat.
