Filmmaking as an industry has always used the technology of its time to the fullest. With the current state of computer aided imagery and the expansion of AI, we are zeroing in on a time where imagination really is the only limiting factor. With this runaway technology, we also need a counter product to balance things out.

We need stories that inspire, ones told in traditional ways with skill, care and finesse. They should feature an absence of visual technology and instead, an emphasis on character development and storyline. George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat is just such a work.

It tells the true life story of the University of Washington eight-man rowing crew that was a surprise entrant to the 1936 Summer Olympics. Those were the games famously held in Nazi controlled Germany before the start of World War ll. That reality provides a backdrop to a study of the class system of the time.

Clooney adds to his directorial portfolio with this decidedly old-fashioned tale of athletic deeds and boys growing up to become men. He keeps the film trickery to an absolute minimum and lets the real-life story shine through. There is a high level of effort from all the cast and crew and that makes the film a joy to watch.

If you are going to make a rom-com by the numbers, who better to slot in the leading roles than two charmers like George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Their appeal is pushed so far forward, that fans of the two are in for a real treat. For the rest, the film while holding no surprises has a professional standard that is extremely high.

The story is set in Bali and that beautiful land is utilised to the fullest. The scenery is stunning and the locals and their customs are absolutely endearing. Almost every frame could be blown up poster size and work in an upmarket travel agency. From sunrise to sunset, it’s all dazzling.

The story revolves around a dedicatedly divorced couple played by Clooney and Roberts. They race to the islands in hope of preventing the rushed marriage of their recent law school graduate daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) and a local lad Gede (Maxime Bouttier). If that sounds familiar, is not a stretch.

It would seem churlish to not give in to all the scenic beauty and on-screen star power and be won over, even if only a little bit. Ticket To Paradise does indeed appeal by film’s end. It makes it quite easy for one to banish their cynical side and just enjoy the holiday from reality.

Tomorrowland is a whirlwind of a movie. It’s energetic, imaginative and sometimes incoherent. It also has a positivity that is sadly missing in almost every current major release. That it works an underlining serious message of the dangers of global warming and using the planet for only commercial gains is also to its benefit.

The story revolves around a parallel universe that is not unlike the hidden world in Ayn Rand’s opus Atlas Shrugged (minus the extreme narcissism). It’s a land where science is let loose to the benefit of mankind. This gives the filmmakers a platform for some very cool wishful technology and also features a lot of fantastic set design artwork.

With a list of participants that includes director Brad Bird (The Incredibles and The Iron Giant), George Clooney and Hugh Laurie, it’s a top tier experience. The screenplay doesn’t always make literal sense but it’s never less than entertaining. The tie in with the Disneyland areas of the same name however is spurious at best.

The only real concern with a recommendation for the full family to visit the cinema to catch Disney’s latest is that the intensity and violence of some of the action sequences might be a bit much for the very young. For everyone else, it’s a film that works quite successfully on a number of different levels.

The American is a film filled with wonderful contrasts. It’s a warm and beautiful looking film about a cold and distant man. It’s a very European film starring one of America’s most popular film exports and it’s a detailed story told with very few words.

The story revolves around a hit man played with icy cool by George Clooney who is on the lame after the tables have been turned on him and he finds himself an intended target for termination. He hides out in a small Italian town that seems familiar to him and pretends to have a somewhat normal life.

Unfortunately this normalcy is only applicable to someone with no discernable job but lots of money and one whose only real human contact is with a priest with a secret and with a hooker with a heart of gold. The film has a wonderful look provided by cinematographer Martin Ruhe and has very European sensibilities provided by director Anton Corbijn and his all-European cast.

This is not a movie for those whose tastes run to films that provide immediate gratification, as its languid pace and slowly communicated back-story take their time to be told. It’s also Clooney in a role where his inherent charm is tempered by a cold and steely presence. Having said that it also provides a chance to experience a place and lifestyle very unfamiliar to anyone that hasn’t actual spent time in rural Italia.

File this one under ‘They just don’t make them like that anymore’. The Coen’s loving tribute (and farce) to a Hollywood studio system long gone and a way of film making also confined to past histories is a comedy that isn’t really built on laughs but more dedicated to paying dividends to film aficionados as well as hardcore Coen Brothers fans.

Viewers with a basic knowledge of cinema history will be paid dividends as the references to a glorious past arrive with regularity. From references like the dance extravaganzas of Busby Berkeley to the screwball comedy of Cary Grant, the love and respect is up on the silver screen for all to see.

A familiar cast of characters is evident and Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Frances McDormand and Scarlett Johansson are just a few regulars that do justice to the always-impressive words of the brothers. There are also the usual underlining themes that give even a period piece like this relevance to today. The screenplay also features some classic Coen characters and the now almost pre-requisite absurd situations to mull over.

The Coen’s trend of following heavy fare with that of a more whimsical nature is intact and Hail, Caesar! is much less demanding than 2013’s Inside Llewyn Davis. It’s subtlety and irony might be lost on some but it’s a worthy addition to the Coen’s canon.

Life is hell in middle America but especially in Suburbicon and especially for Nicky (Noah Jupe). Under the thin veneer of civility lies a very dark heart, one that envelopes and consumes the young boy’s life. Disfunction, amorality and racial prejudice surround him.

Mr. Smooth, George Clooney directs alone but shares writing credit with the brothers Coen and Grant Heslov (Good Night, and Good Luck and The Monuments Men). The film lives in the same world that has occupied Joel and Ethan for many years now and it looks into the evil that regular people are capable of when they suspend all morality or give into the pack mentality.

As a time capsule of mid-century life in American it gets the nuances just right and you can easily get lost in the mid-day high ball and pleated skirts, that is until the body count starts adding up. It’s not just the wall paper that is a horror show.

There is always a fine line between social commentary and entertainment when movies make bold statements and Suburbicon has more than a few moments where the outrage is equal to the entertainment. It’s up to the audience to make the distinction.
