Not comfortably fitting into any one genre, Nope uses elements of many to tell a multi-faceted story. Its suspense elements are what defines it on the surface and this is brought to the forefront by its pacing. It gives little at first and dovetails many strands into its narrative.

The film starts with a fictitious reenactment involving a real-life chimpanzeeTV star named Travis who infamously mauled a friend of its owner. This event makes more sense as the story evolves.

Jordan Peele who wrote, produced and directed the film always builds many layers of meaning into his work and this is among his more deeply nuanced projects. It may be about the brutality of the police towards those of colour or how the idea of Hollywood eats and destroys more than it creates or then again it might not.

While Nope is far from straightforward, it gives you much to dwell on at its conclusion. There are deep levels of subtext to decipher and it’s down to your own deductive capabilities. It’s also a blast to read up on others’ takes as the expansion of the themes present is fascinating.

As Hollywood expands the scope of its storytelling to include more films with gender, race, and sexual orientation at their core, we as an audience will be exposed to new heights of emotional response. Judas and the Black Messiah is just such a film. Its impact is devastating.

As the film’s title suggests, it’s the story of the betrayal and ultimate assassination of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) who was involved in the Black Panther Party in Chicago in the late sixties. Kaluuya whose acting style thus far has been one of reductionism expands his range to include a role filled with anger and indignation. He delivers his words with an unbridled sense of outrage.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

At times, the words and emotion are rendered so quickly, it’s hard to understand the actual dialogue, you are oftentimes left with just the feeling that the scene engenders. It keeps you on your toes and never lets you be an impartial and uninvolved viewer. You have to closely follow major and minor details to get the most out of the experience.

Powerful and condemning of the federal government in America in the late sixties, Judas and the Black Messiah show how little advancement the black struggle has made in the decades since. If it is the filmmaker’s intention to spark outrage at this miscarriage of justice and to install a sense of how much needs to change, then they have succeeded spectacularly.

Who saw this one coming? American comedian Jordan Peele has delivered one of the most entertaining films of the year and one that defies easy categorisation. It’s less important to call it a thriller or a horror film or a comedy or even a social commentary piece because its unique blend of all those elements are what gives it its impact.

The story revolves around leaving the big city and going out to the country to meet the girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Along the way it touches on issues as diverse as rich white privilege, social injustice, true friendship and how often times people are completely different than the first impression would lead you to believe.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

The events of the confrontation become public knowledge via the police officer’s dash cam footage and the end result is that the two become folk heroes to those fighting the good fight against the lopsided application of police force. This connection is an important one as they are aided during their journey by people that see the injustice in their plight

To view Queen & Slim solely as a political statement about the #BlackLivesMatter movement does it a great disservice. It is an involving work based on a strong cry for social justice and is inclusive of some amazing performances to increase the impact. It is almost impossible to not have the film burn its way into your consciousness.

Thanks to Universal Pictures Australia we have five double passes to give away to a special screening of Queen & Slim!

From two-time Grammy award winning director Melina Matsoukas (HBO’s Insecure, the Emmy award-winning “Thanksgiving” episode of Netflix’s Master of None, and Beyonce’s “Formation,”) and from trailblazing, Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe (Netflix’s Master of None), comes the unflinching new drama, Queen & Slim.

While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio, a black man (Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya) and a black woman (Jodie Turner-Smith), are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defense. Terrified and in fear for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman, a criminal defense lawyer, are forced to go on the run. But the incident is captured on video and goes viral, and the couple unwittingly become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people across the country.
