Humour is a wonderful thing in a movie. Its ability to be the conductive tissue that holds things together is amply demonstrated by The Accountant 2. Director Gavin O’Connor’s second go at the successful franchise is quite entertaining and certainly not because of the depth of the story but rather the interpersonal dynamics of its two lead actors.

Tightly wound (and rather deadly) accountant Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) and his alpha-male brother Braxton (Jon Bernthal) do all the heavy lifting and provide the film with its best moments. They fight like only brothers can and then kick butt like only cinematic bad boys can and it’s a blast to behold.

Their slowly developing relationship provides a few touching moments and their general way with each other is played mostly for laughs. A lot of the gags hit the mark. The story as it is revolves around a missing child. The context of that situation and the details add a bit of interest but its finer points are murky at best.

This lack of a scintillating storyline matters little when there are so many humorous moments to stitch things together. The pace is fast and there is very little downtime. The Accountant 2 sees the filmmakers lean heavily into the comic realm and it’s a successful strategy.

With The Flash, it seems that DC has finally cracked the code. The excessive darkness that has blighted most of the earlier films has been lifted and the end result is a much more enjoyable experience. There are still dark moments but they don’t overwhelm the narrative.

The Flash character has always inhabited a world similar to that of Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man is so much as a somewhat normal teen who through an accident is given special powers. These powers combined with the challenges of the teen years make them more relatable. We’ve all had awkward moments during that phase of life.

Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) continues to be haunted by the death of his mother and the unjust incarceration of his father for her murder. He uses his powers to go back in time to undo that wrong and throws the space-time continuum out of whack. This opens up things for some great reveals and just a general sense of fun.

If DC continues with getting the mix of humour and pathos this correct they will be able to give that other house of ink a proper run for their money. Relatable characters and spectacular conflicts are a winner in anyone’s books. Also in line with that other companies’ products, you have to stay until the very end to catch a hilarious cameo.

In Robert Rodriguez’s new film Hypnotic you are taken on a bumpy ride with an ever-changing narrative with a sting in the tail. It plays with reality with reckless abandon and challenges you to piece together a less-than-satisfactory first half with a more engaging final two reels.

Ben Affleck plays Detective Danny Rourke, a damaged man who is still dealing with the kidnap loss of a daughter and a life that unravelled from that point on. While on duty he is called to the scene of a potential bank robbery and this is where things get rather strange.

// ]]>

As events unfold you are left with a number of misdirections that collectively send you in several wrong directions. The film incorporates a multiple-genre approach. It’s a little bit police procedural, a little bit science fiction and a little bit phycological horror and it never squarely lands in any one category

Tying so many disparate threads into a cohesive strand is a challenge that Rodriguez is almost up for. He’s not helped by several vague character arcs but this is the interesting part when the final reveal happens, the lens is cleaned and the ambiguity is resolved.

We live in a time that is overloaded by the cult of personality. Being famous for being famous is sad fact of life, but sometimes a person comes along that through sheer talent and will transcend their sport or field of endeavour. Basketball player Michael Jordan is one such outlier.

His alignment with the shoe company Nike and the contract he signed that gave him a percentage of each shoe with his name on it was groundbreaking and changed the industry overnight. Air provides a fascinating look at the human endeavour behind the scenes of this monumental event.

Matt Damon is Sonny Vaccaro, the Nike employee most responsible for signing Jordon to the brand. A brand at the time that was lagging in sales in the basketball shoe market. The film, through the soundtrack and bad fashion, sells the eighties era as does Damon’s dad bod and daggy dress sense.

The film is less about the game of basketball and more about marketing and the monetising of celebrity sports figures. Its take on a pivotal event in an industry that had never shared profit with its endorsees is illuminating. It is well-paced and concludes leaving you wanting more. It is recommended even if you have no interest in the sport.

The historical epic is a cinematic and thought-provoking drama set in the midst of the Hundred Years War that explores the ubiquitous power of men, the frailty of justice and the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the service of truth. Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France’s last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals. Carrouges is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. Le Gris is a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles in court. When Carrouges’ wife, Marguerite, is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies, she refuses to stay silent, stepping forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. The ensuing trial by combat, a grueling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God’s hands.

Oscar® winner Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” “Ford v Ferrari”) is Jean de Carrouges, two-time Academy Award® nominee Adam Driver (“Marriage Story,” “BlacKkKlansman”) is Jacques Le Gris, Emmy® winner Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve,” “Free Guy”) is Marguerite de Carrouges and two-time Oscar winner Ben Affleck (“Argo,” “Good Will Hunting”) is Count Pierre d’Alençon. The screenplay is by Oscar nominee Nicole Holofcener (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) & Ben Affleck & Matt Damon based on the book by Eric Jager. The film is produced by Ridley Scott, Kevin J. Walsh (“Manchester by the Sea”), Jennifer Fox (“Nightcrawler”), Nicole Holofcener, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck with Kevin Halloran (“Ford v Ferrari”), Drew Vinton (“Promised Land”), Madison Ainley (“Justice League”) serving as executive producers.

“The Last Duel” is based on Eric Jager’s book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France, which brings the turbulent Middle Ages to life in striking detail. When etiquette, social aspirations and justice were driven by the codes of chivalry, the consequences for defying the institutions of the time – the Church, the nobility at court, a teenage king – could be severe. For a woman navigating these violent times, one who had no legal standing without the support of her husband, the stakes were even higher.

“I love working with Matt, so it was an added bonus to be able to work with him and Ben as both actors and as screenwriters, along with Nicole Holofcener, and I knew it would be a great result,” says director/producer Ridley Scott. “I had admired the show ‘Killing Eve’ and had been looking for the opportunity to present Jodie Comer with a challenging role. Her performance as Marguerite will make her one of the great actresses of her generation.”

“This film is an effort to retell the story of a heroic woman from history whom most people haven’t heard of. We admired her bravery and resolute determination and felt this was both a story that needed to be told and one whose drama would captivate audiences the way it moved us as writers. As we further explored the story, we found so many aspects of the formal, codified patriarchy of 14th century Western Europe to still be present in vestigial ways (and in some cases almost unchanged) in today’s society,” says Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. “We chose to use the device of telling the story from several character’s perspectives in order to examine the immutable fact that although often multiple people who experience the same event come away with differing accounts, there can only be one truth.”

Argo is a taunt and well-scripted thriller made even more appealing by virtue of it being based on a true story that was finally declassified almost two decades after it actually happened. Director Ben Affleck has once again proven to be a real asset behind the camera as this film is easily the equal of his last directorial effort, The Town. The acting is also very effective as are the fashions and facial hair in setting the seventies tone.

The story revolves around the efforts of a CIA operative Tony Mendez (Affleck) who concocts and implements a fantastical plan to help six American diplomats escape from Tehran during the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. The plan to have them escape by posing as members of a film crew making a science fiction film called Argo sounds like a plan that only Hollywood types could come up with and that is partially true.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Two real tinsel town insiders’ help with the plan and the two played by John Goodman and Alan Arkin give the film some of its funniest moments as well as a great catch line, which can’t be repeated here. The views from inside the machinations of the US government also add to the heightened sense of both intrigue and tension.

The film plays fast as loose with a lot of the actual facts of the story but this is a small complaint as the end results will leave you with sweaty palms and rapid breathing during the final moments of the escape. With the years ticking by and more and more amazing real life tales becoming a matter of public record, here’s to hoping that if they make movie versions of those real life tales, they are done as well and engaging as this one.
