In the current times when the AI influence in the visual arts has never been more prevalent, the old adage “seeing is believing” has never had less relevance. Amid this, round three of the Now You See Me franchise has hit our screens. The Horsemen have returned this time, and with a few new members. Their nemesis comes from the shady world of diamond cartels.

The opposition is led by Veronika Vanderberg, a South African who runs a diamond company started by her late Nazi father. Their profits now come from laundering money for the criminal elites. She is played with an evil glee by Rosamund Pike. When she gets ready to auction the world’s largest diamond, the group springs into action.

// ]]>

Having broken up over ten years ago after their last big caper, the Four Horsemen are spurred back into action by the individual receipt of a mysterious tarot card. The three newbies arrive via a deep fake show featuring the artificial likenesses of the original four. They are soon integrated into the team and now have a common cause.

As is the case with all the Now You See Me films, you can never believe what transpires on screen until the final reveal, and this approach is fun for all the armchair detectives out there. Your ability to read between the lines and second-guess the actions of all of the cast members will reinforce your fun. Some motives you will see, many you won’t.

It will be a long long time before you encounter a character quite like Oliver Quick again. Masterfully created by actor Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk and The Banshees of Inisherin), his performance is unsettling from the first frame and is one filled with strange idiosyncrasies. It’s also very brave for a young actor at this point in his career.

Oliver is the odd man out. A student at Oxford that can claim neither money nor position. When he comes into contact with fellow student Felix Catto (Jacob Elordi) he sees him as possessing everything he fancies. Rich and from a family of privilege, he is great with the ladies and comfortable in his own skin. It is everything Oliver is not.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

When he is invited to vacation at the Catton residence, a huge estate called Saltburn, he gets a glimpse of a way of life he’s always coveted. The social commentary on the vapid and disconnected reality of the super-rich is played out in bold and often hilariously broad strokes. Especially the lady of the manor Elspeth Catton (Rosamund Pike).

Just like trying to hold sand in a clenched fist, the tighter you try to hold the reality of Satltburn in your mind, the more it slips away. It is filled with so many odd and confronting moments, it keeps you guessing until the very end. Even when things happen that you see coming, the filmmakers have put a unique slant on them. See this as it’s unlike anything else out there at the moment.

Based on a memoir by British journalist Lynn Barber and filtered through a Nick Hornby screenplay, An Education is a sometimes-convincing coming of age story set in England in the early sixties. The film’s strongest points are the performances of its actors. Peter Sarsgaard as the too good to be true older man David and Carey Mulligan and the not so innocent teenage Jenny are both outstanding.

Jenny is being raised by the archetype pushy Father and understanding Mother as an only child in a typical English row house. She is intelligent and studious and gets good grades in school. She is also intelligent enough to be bored with what her current situation has to offer. This is the sixties and extraordinary things are happening all over the world except in her hometown. Along comes the older man David and sweeps her off her feet.

In one of those cases of the audience always being one-step ahead of what progresses on-screen, the story offers few surprises. The transition of Jenny’s parents from overprotective guardians to co-conspirators while even if accurate to Barber’s true story feels false. There is enough authenticity to carry some elements of the story but overall it’s less than totally convincing.

You tend to ignore some elements of the story and just enjoy the performances but then a strange thing happens. The film with a running time of only 95 minutes has one of the most rushed feeling final acts on record. It’s a strange way to end a film and feels like the product of too many test screenings. It’s still worth seeing if for nothing else but the actor’s fine work but the believability and pacing of the story are a bit of a letdown.

Radioactive is a journey through Marie Curie’s (Rosamund Pike) enduring legacies – her passionate partnerships, scientific breakthroughs, and the consequences that follow.

In late 19th century Paris, Marie met fellow scientist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley). The pair went on to marry, raised two daughters and changed the face of science forever by their discovery of radioactivity. In 1903, the pair jointly won the Nobel Prize in physics for their discovery, making Marie the first woman to win the esteemed prize.

After the death of her beloved Pierre, Marie’s commitment to science remained unwavering and her work went on to win her a second Nobel Prize, taking with it the responsibility for discoveries which changed the world. This is a bold, visionary depiction of a legacy of an extraordinary life, the transformative effects and ensuing fallout of the Curie’s work and an exploration of how this impacted the defining moments of the 20th Century.

Starring BAFTA and Academy Award® nominee Rosamund Pike (GONE GIRL, A UNITED KINGDOM), Sam Riley (CONTROL, MALEFICENT), Anya Taylor-Joy (THE WITCH, SPLIT) and Simon Russell Beale (THE DEATH OF STALIN, INTO THE WOODS)and directed by Academy Award® nominated Marjane Satrapi (PERSEPOLIS, THE VOICES), RADIOACTIVE is a cutting-edge historical drama which delves deeply into Marie Curie’s life and the aftermath of her discoveries.

Adapted from Lauren Redniss’ graphic novel ‘Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout’, the screenplay was written by Jack Thorne (WONDER, Channel 4’sKIRI, HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD).

The film is produced by Shoebox Films’ Paul Webster (ATONEMENT, EASTERN PROMISES, SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN), together with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, co-chairmen of the BAFTA award-winning production company Working Title Films (THE DARKEST HOUR, LES MISERABLES, THE DANISH GIRL, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, RUSH).

STUDIOCANAL and Amazon Studios co-financed the feature film, which was filmed on location in Budapest and Spain.

A hilarious journey through an unforgettable family holiday as a couple attempts to keep their impending divorce secret from their extended family.

Doug (David Tennant) and Abi (Rosamund Pike) and their three children travel to the Scottish Highlands for Doug’s father Gordie’s (Billy Connolly) birthday party, where it’s soon clear that when it comes to keeping their secret under wraps their children are their biggest liability.

From nine year old Lottie’s notebook to keep track of the lies so she remembers which ones to tell, to four year old Jess’s perverse attachment to a brick names Norman, for their parents a week has never seemed such a long time.

But it’s middle child Mickey and his granddad’s shared passing for Vikings which gives rise to the most far-reaching and unexpected consequences. When a day at the beach turns to tragedy, the children take matters into their own hands.

From the creators of hit BBC comedy series Outnumbered – What We Did On Our Holiday is funny, honest and ultimately uplifting.
