HOMEWORK CAN WAIT. SAVING THE WORLD CAN’T.

Based on the hugely popular Zac Power book series, ZAC POWER brings the beloved teenage spy to the big screen for the very first time. Rising star Parker Little leads the voice cast as Zac Power, joined by BAFTA-winning comedian, actor, presenter, and author Matt Lucas. They’re supported by an ensemble of international and Australian talent, including Kylie Cantrall, Leah Purcell, David Wenham, Tanya Hennessy, Ed Oxenbould and Tim Minchin.

Directed by Alexs Stadermann (200% Wolf, Maya the Bee: The Honey Games) and David Webster (Kangaroo Beach; Spongo, Fuzz & Jalapena), this high‑energy action adventure follows super‑spy Zac as he takes on daring missions, fierce rivalries, and the pressure of staying on top.

“Zac Power is packed with big action, wild gadgets and the kind of spy-movie mayhem that’s as ridiculous as it is thrilling. We set out to honour the spirit of the books while creating a bold, cinematic Australian adventure for families, and this teaser is just the first taste. We can’t wait for audiences to experience Zac’s first big-screen mission in cinemas next year.” – Directors, Alexs Stadermann & David Webster.

As a prequel to the much-loved 1971 classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Wonka has its work cut out. Writer/director Paul King (Paddington and The Mighty Boosh) has used Roald Dahl’s source material to concoct an easy-to-watch and charming film. It’s a little short of drama but it was made to highlight the magic that Willy Wonka possessed.

Hollywood’s favourite man/boy Timothée Chalamet does fine in the lead role and even though he has no real vocal range, doesn’t embarrass himself by singing. The character’s ability to create chocolate and magic out of thin air is a bit overused and this makes for a very unchallenging film experience. Its strength is in its charm.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The technical elements of the film are stellar as the costumes and set design look fabulous as does the colour palette used. Olivia Colman chews up every scene she’s in as the deplorable Mrs. Scrubbit. Her crazy is well matched by the performance of Tom Davis as her henchman Bleacher. Calah Lane is also first-rate in the female lead role Noodle.

With its elements so finely tuned, Wonka is a sugar rush of a film. It is easily digestible and should endear itself to those who crave uncomplicated and accessible cinema. It contains so little reference to the current state of world events, it is therapeutic to just spend time in its universe.

It’s always easy to expect great visual things from a Tim Burton film but Alice In Wonderland really does exceed all ocular expectations. It looks utterly amazing and the 3D effects are used sparingly and never just for the sake of a quick gimmick.

One thinks that the story’s original author Lewis Carroll might have gotten hold of some of the Blue Caterpillar’s best stash before pen was put to paper.

Australian actor Mia Wasikowska as Alice, starts out as a dour young girl sent off to marry a man she doesn’t love and through the magic of the story becomes a luminous woman ready to take on the world. It really is a girl power tale for the ages (maybe minus all the drug references though). Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter gets to channel all his inner craziness and is a real scene-stealer.

Having read the original text so far back in my past I can’t attest to any of its devotion to the original story, I can only state that giving someone with as much imagination as Tim Burton free reign to capture the vision in his mind’s eye has helped to create one of the most visually arresting films of all time. It’s also to the film’s credit that the storyline is every bit the equal to the visual extravagance.

The premise is rather simple, make the kind of road movie that stars a pack of randy blokes getting into all kinds of mischief but this time have all the main characters be women instead of men. What looks simple on paper becomes more complex when you try to shoehorn female dynamics into a mold made for males.

Directed by TV actor/director Paul Feig and produced in part by Judd Apatow, Bridesmaids tries to deliver a raucous ride and succeeds for the most part. The cast is excellent and building a film around Kristen Wiig (who is also one of the film’s writers) is never a bad thing as she is a comic heavyweight, it’s just that it’s not always believable seeing women act as stupid and self-involved as men.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

This out of character activity leads to some very funny moments but a lot of the bawdy behaviour feels forced and rather slapstick. Building the action around the upcoming nuptials also sends the film down a well-worn path and some of the gags feel quite recycled but then what modern road movie doesn’t elicit a number of those same responses?

In answer to a segment of the market that is virtually ignored or given very sub-standard product (the abomination that was Sex and The City 2 anyone?) Bridesmaids should be applauded and its better than expected gate receipts show that there is an audience out there. Even if the film isn’t as good as it should or could be, it might still mark the start of something good.
