From the creators of Taken and Transporter, Weekend in Taipei follows John Lawlor (Luke Evans), a pit-bull DEA agent who’s married to his job – there’s not a bad guy he can’t stop and nothing he won’t sacrifice to close out a case.

Joey Kang (Gwen Lun-mei) is a top “Transporter” in Taipei – fast-driving and fast-thinking, she’s difficult to pin down, impossible to catch.

Showing more discipline and restraint than we’ve become accustomed to with Roland Emmerich, this time out he rolls back the forced histrionics and creates a straightforward account of one of World War Two’s most pivotal battles. The Battle Of Midway was a decisive event and hobbled the early Japanese effort in the Pacific.

In 1941 they started their offensive against the USA with a sneak attack on Pearl Harbour. Their hopes of a quick disabling of the American military might in the region was a stated goal. Due to the allied forces’ ability to decipher their secret communications, the American forces were able to mount a successful counter attack.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Cleverly incorporating images from the actual early editions of the WW comic books, you begin to realise how risqué the original character was drawn. The themes of domination, submission and bondage are clear to see and it makes one wonder how the publishers of the time got away (even temporarily) with it. It’s also interesting to note that some of Marston’s real living relatives have come out and denied some of the more salacious elements of the film.

The creation of such a lasting character as Wonder Woman with the multiple versions to reflect the temper of the times is a testament to Marston’s brilliance and clever subversion. This is a human story and one that fans of the bigger than life comic book figures will enjoy as well.

How effected are you in the enjoyment of a film by the words and actions of others? During a recent screening of The Girl On The Train, this was put to the test. My partner and I thought the film was entertaining and featured some very good acting performances. It was a good but not great film that was a little bit by the numbers. On our way out of the cinema though, the comments overheard from the invited guests, were so negative, it was a bit overwhelming. A different view from theirs was not wanted nor accepted.

Every film viewing session, while being a great collective experience should be assessed without the bias of others. We’ve all had to endure watching films when those around us are so obviously not enjoying themselves. It enacts a real negative vibe and is as rude as those that chomp and plastic wrap rustle their way through the entire film.

Assessing The Girl On The Train as its own entity is also a bit difficult with so much press comparing it to Gone Girl. This sets up the audience to expect the big twist and this film doesn’t really deliver those kinds of surprises. The good and the bad characters are a little too obvious and the only real shading is provided by the actor’s chops (with unfortunately little help from the script).

Sorry about that, rant now over. With a film like this, it is best to go see it for yourself, get lost in that dark room with everyone else, try to enjoy yourself and then make up your own mind afterwards.
