With his new spy yarn Argylle, Vaughn returns to the fold with all those idiosyncrasies intact. It’s a tale of world domination delivered with a sly wink and an ever-changing landscape of who is good and who is bad and what their true intentions are proven to be. Kind of like John le Carré on acid, really strong acid.

Bryce Dallas Howard plays Elly Conway, a novelist who has penned a series of books based on a spy called Argylle. When she is rescued from an attack on a train by Aidan (Sam Rockwell) her real life and the contents of her books blur together most entertainingly. It keeps her character and you the audience member guessing what craziness will happen next until the very last frame.

This is unlike almost any other entrant to the spy genre. Its extravagant abuse of colour and plot marks it as something infectious and fun. If the world really is going to hell in a handbasket, one would hope that the perpetrator of this impending doom would have an aesthetic and sense of whimsey to match that of Vaughn’s.

Every action scene in the film, and these make up almost the entirety of the effort are up close and personal with Mister Cruise.The effect is almost dizzying. The action is so relentless and in your face, you marvel at the fifty-six year old’s athleticism and energy. His acting chops are little used here as there in very little storyline to hold it all together.

What exposition there is revolves around saving the world from nuclear terrorist attacks and rouge ex-secret agents. There are a few twists that are easy to see through and some fairly transparent bad guys but his does little to dampen the fun. The entertainment value comes from the unbelievable action and minimum use of computer generated imagery.

Some of Tom Cruise’s films appeal to the mind, this latest edition of Mission Impossible will appeal to those with an extravagant sense of adventure. The stunts are huge and obviously dangerous and there is little to get in the way of this scenario as the film launches from amazing action piece to an even more amazing action piece. The pace is relentless.

Elsewhere, Jason Momoa is actually able to make the Aquaman character seem cool and fast forwarding Wonder Woman’s arc allows Gal Gadot to act more naturally. It’s still at heart a comic book movie and this finds everything in overdrive, even the final battle is so over the top as to defy description. The CGI graphics are more moody and less photorealistic than other franchises and this gives the film its own look and feel.

One of the few minor letdowns is in the character of the Big Bad and without giving away too much, they are just a bit too generic. The balance between the recruitment and formation of the Justice League is finely sequenced but the final reel and its big battle is the film’s least successful element.

Also be warned DC has now fully jumped on the Marvel bandwagon and make sure to stay until the very end so as not to miss the coda at the end of the credits.
