First let’s dispense with the Dumbo in the room and say that the CGI Seven Stooges (er, I mean little people) are perfectly fine and fit Marc Webb’s overall vision of the film quite well. Their look is far more storybook than humans with a ton of make-up would have achieved. Second Rachel Zegler does a fine job as the tile character with her lovely voice and screen presence and kudos to Disney for continuing to expand their colour palette. And finally, Gal Gadot is more than entitled to her opinions as is every human being.

With some or all of the politics out of the way, what do we have with the new live-action remake of the 1937 classic? Trying to outdo the original hand-drawn version was never going to happen as it is one the most beautifully drawn works of art in the world, Every frame of that film is a masterpiece and trying to do that in the present day and paying the animators their proper due would have exceeded the $270 million spent on this version.

What we have is a modern take on a classic story and while it’s not perfect, it is highly entertaining and at times visually impressive. The story was never one with excessive depth to begin with and that continues but its underlying ethos is intact and you can still add as much subtext to it as you want. The singing is well done and the earworm ditties still stick in the head. Playing something more extreme on the way home from the cinema will help, my solution was Swedish Death Metal.

Will seeing it become a rite of passage for today’s children? They could do a lot worse and one can hope that the white noise surrounding the film subsides and it can be seen for what it is, an impressive attempt to update an old-school classic for the modern day and dilute some of the previous missteps.
This tale of passion and jealousy, which is directed by and stars five-time Academy Award® nominee Kenneth Branagh and features an all-star ensemble cast, opens in Australian cinemas February 10, 2022.

Based on the 1937 novel by Agatha Christie, “Death on the Nile” is a daring mystery-thriller about the emotional chaos and deadly consequences triggered by obsessive love. Kenneth Branagh, back as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot, is joined by Tom Bateman, four-time Oscar® nominee Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders and Letitia Wright. “Death on the Nile,” which reunites the filmmaking team behind 2017’s global hit “Murder on the Orient Express,” is written by Michael Green, adapted from Christie’s novel, and is produced by Ridley Scott, Kenneth Branagh, p.g.a., Judy Hofflund, p.g.a. and Kevin J. Walsh, with Mark Gordon, Simon Kinberg, Matthew Jenkins, James Prichard and Mathew Prichard serving as executive producers.

Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short. Set against an epic landscape of sweeping desert vistas and the majestic Giza pyramids, this dramatic tale of love gone wrong features a cosmopolitan group of impeccably dressed travellers and enough wicked twists and turns to leave audiences guessing until the final, shocking denouement.

Filmed with 65mm Panavision cameras in late 2019, “Death on the Nile” transports audiences to the 1930s, recreating many of the locations that served as inspiration for Christie’s glamorous, high society thriller.

With audiences returning to cinemas, Disney has committed to an exclusive theatrical release for “Death on the Nile.” 20th Century Studios production president Steve Asbell says, “Ken’s sweeping, elegant vision for this classic story deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. We’re so proud of this film, our brilliant cast, and the stellar work that went into bringing ‘Death on the Nile’ to screen. We know that audiences can’t wait to experience Hercule Poirot’s next adventure, and we’re thrilled to continue working with Ken as he lends his masterful storytelling vision to the newest film in this celebrated franchise.”

James Prichard, chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., says, “More than 100 years after the publication of Agatha Christie’s first novel, her crime fiction works remain immensely popular and continue to be discovered anew by people around the world. I’m thrilled that Disney and our partners believe in this franchise, which has helped introduce millions of new fans to Christie’s classic works. We’re honored to be in business with Disney, Ken, and all who are dedicated to preserving the long legacy of these titles for future generations.”

Death on the Nile will be released in Australian Cinemas February 10, 2022!

Few films in cinema today pack a bigger bang for the buck than the Fast & Furious series. And with the special effects driven approach on hiatus with the Bond franchise while it pursues a more character driven agenda, you need look no further than Vin and company for the most over the top stunts coming out of tinsel town. But as joyously exuberant as most moments of F&F7 are, they are also tinged with sadness.

Actor Paul Walker’s passing back in the 2013 was a very sad moment and happened midway through the filming of F&F 7. It caused a number of delays while they rewrote the script. Walker was a very well established journeyman actor and was well liked by all who knew him. This plays out sombrely in the latest film as the series has always focused on a group dynamic and championed the virtues of being part of an extended family.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The filmmakers have done a good job of staying true to Walker’s established character in the series and have successfully integrated the existing footage of Walker into the new story lines. There are only a few instances during scenes of hand-to-hand combat where it becomes somewhat obvious that there is a stand-in double being utilized.

The story line this time out follows the set up from the final scenes of the previous edition in the series, where the brother of the big bad that the group has just dispensed seeks revenge. This new character is played by action star Jason Statham and he looks to be a more permanent addition to the cast. Statham continues his few words but big fists approach with effectiveness.

Even with the solemn vibe present, the latest Fast & Furious is still a joyous thing to behold as all the cast and crew gleefully disregard the laws of physics and common sense, as they pull no punches in creating one of the most extreme automotive action films ever made. It goes way beyond the suspension of disbelief mode and enters the pure fun zone with a dedication that is an absolute thrill to behold.

The House of Mouse is getting much better at this sequel thing and Ralph Breaks The Internet is a good example. It’s fun on the surface and not bereft on meaning on the inside. It’s also filled with enough new and fresh ideas to hold its own in this holiday season.

Ralph (John C. Reilly) and his BFF Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) go on a mission to save Vanellope’s old school video game and this involves a trip into the idiosyncrasies of the Internet. The journey is filled with great visual representations of some of the web’s oddest elements.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The film is unafraid of presenting things that are quite dark (for a kid’s film) even including a visit to the dark web and a scary visual representation of a computer virus. It doesn’t undersell its youth audience members and there are a few adult jokes thrown in for good measure.

Translating web crazy into family friendly visuals is handled with skill and imagination. As is taking advantage of the Disney playbook of characters including a very funny bit about the brand’s princesses. The six-year wait since Wreck-It Ralph kicked things off in 2012 has been well worth the wait.
