It may be too early in the year to cast a vote for the coolest cinematic couple of 2025 but George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) and Kathryn St. Jean (Cate Blanchett) will surely be on the shortlist come year’s end. Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag takes slow burn to a new level and this power couple play a prime role in that. It’s a spy tale so understated that every little nuance needs to be thoroughly examined.

It all starts with a submerged storyline and while you feel an undercurrent of skulduggery nothing obvious rises to the surface for quite some time. It might even be a tad tardy for those who desire overdriven onscreen action from the go as the genre is often known for those big loud openers. Soderbergh is such an established auteur and he plays to his strengths here including his usual star-studded cast.

You get several James Bond alumni like Pierce Brosnan (the man himself) and Naomie Harris (Moneypenny) as well as Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton) and another Skarsgår brother, in this case Gustaf. They are all given some delectable dialogue to deliver and they do it so well. These are some very detailed performances and the acting momentum provides David Koepp’s screenplay with a glorious sheen.

This is a film for the hardcore fan of the thinking man’s spy yarn and you need to invest in it to get maximum enjoyment. Bullets might not fly with regularity but the performances provide plenty of sparks and when things do ratchet up and reach the inevitable crescendo the action is more than sufficient to prove completely satisfying.

The Mad Max franchise has an interesting history. From the guerrilla tactics used during the filming of the first chapter, where no permits were asked for nor needed to the amazing look and feel of later chapters, it is one of cinema’s most iconic series. Using mostly actual vehicles and real human-driven stunts, the films have a believability that is quite intoxicating. It’s also a series that is getting better and the latest Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga fills in quite a few gaps in the overriding story arc.

Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road gets her origin story this time out and it’s a cracker. Played by Alyla Browne (as the child) and Anya Taylor-Joy (as the young adult), the hardships endured at these early stages of her life help to inform how someone so young could have such great resolve. This is an unbelievably harsh land and her strength is more than equal to the task of survival.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The dystopian landscape that provide the backdrop for all the films seems even more brutal this time and it’s to writer/director George Miller’s consummate skills that this brutality is more implied than graphically shown. There are many startling scenes but none that cross over into being outright repulsive. This helps to make the work more inviting. You get to marvel at Furiosa’s strength and steadfast connection to the last remaining glimmers of humanity.

The series has never featured more imaginative carnage or crazier action and characters, the most fun of which is Chris Hemsworth as the manic Dr. Dementus. He chews up and spits out every scene he’s in, and he and Taylor-Joy’s inevitable showdown ends in a multifaceted way that is quite satisfying. Miller’s grasp of the characters that inhabit this wild world is still pin-sharp and this bodes well for the future of the franchise.

Miller now turns the page again with an all-new original, standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of the powerhouse character from the multiple Oscar-winning global smash “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The new feature from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures is produced by Miller and his longtime partner, Oscar-nominated producer Doug Mitchell (“Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Babe”), under their Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Living is the story of an ordinary man, reduced by years of oppressive office routine to a shadow existence, who at the eleventh hour makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful – into one he can say has been lived to the full.

1953. A London shattered by WWII is still recovering. Williams (Bill Nighy), a veteran civil servant, is an important cog within the city’s bureaucracy as it struggles to rebuild. Buried under paperwork at the office, lonely at home, his life has long felt empty and meaningless.

Then a shattering medical diagnosis forces him to take stock – and to try and grasp fulfilment before it goes beyond reach. At a seaside resort, chaperoned by a local decadent (Tom Burke), he flirts with hedonism before rejecting it as his solution.

Back in London he finds himself drawn to the natural vitality of Margaret (Aimee Lou Wood), a young woman who once worked under his supervision and is now determined to spread her wings. Then one evening he is struck by a revelation – one as simple as it is profound – and with a new energy, and the help of Peter (Alex Sharp), an idealistic new recruit to his department, he sets about creating a legacy for the next generation.
