You know you are in for an extreme experience when the main man behind the film, Dev Patel wishes you good luck in the taped introduction that was shown before the feature. He wears many hats here as the writer/director/producer and lead actor for Monkey Man. His visual sense defines the film’s look with almost every scene bathed in scarlet and shadow.

The story of revenge runs parallel with an examination of the plight of the poor and disenfranchised in India and the folklore surrounding Hanuman. This ape or monkey-like deity in Hinduism is considered immortal and is celebrated for his wisdom, strength, courage, and self-discipline. Patel’s character Kid shares most of these traits and virtues.

Patel has delivered a film crackling with energy and violence. This film feels like the Indian version of the John Wick saga, with our hero every bit the lethal weapon that is Wick. It does however have its own feel and sense of pace and visual presentation. This is a strong first film from Dev and makes one look towards his future with eager anticipation.

Oscar® nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) achieves an astonishing, tour-de-force feature directing debut with an action thriller about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless.

Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.

After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).

As one of the last frontiers representative of the time when wild beasts freely roamed the planet, Africa is a land at risk and one that deserves our committed preservation. The threat posed by man is turned on its head by a lone beast that is forced to fight back.

After its entire pride is decimated by a group of marauding poachers, a lion goes rogue and became the beast of the film’s title. He sweeps through the area surrounding his den disposing of almost all of its human inhabitants. This massive creature is relentless in its aggression and ferociousness.

Into this cauldron steps Dr Nate Samuels (Idris Elba) and his two young daughters Meredith (Iyana Halley) and Norah (Leah Jeffries). The Samuels are joined on this journey by long-time friend Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley). The family is there to visit the homeland of the doctor’s late wife.

When humans have the hubris to think they control nature, things often go astray and this allegory makes that clear. We are never as in control as we think we are. Tense and exciting during its compact running time, Beast turns the table on the human excursion in the wilds of Africa. The action is explicit and relentless.

Playing out like this generation’s Reservoir Dogs, Free Fire plays it up close and claustrophobic. It’s also a vivid lesson in how crime does not pay, especially when you’re either thick or impaired.

The cast is A-list, Brie Larson (following up her star turn in Room), Armie Hammer (unrecognisable under all that facial hair) and Cillian Murphy (effective as a shady dude with values), the film’s intent is decidedly not and in this case that is a good thing. No wildly improbable flights of CGI fancy or vanity visuals, just a gritty story with dire consequences.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>//

Set primarily is one set, the film plays off the actors ability to drop in and out of view but still stay in one’s mind. Not as talky as QT’s take, this cautionary tale does none the less prove once again there are easier ways to make a living than braking the law.

With as solid of an effort as this, director/writer Ben Wheatley continues his unconventional climb up the Hollywood heap and remains one to keep an eye on. Future works include Freakshift a horror romp that will star Alicia Vikander.
