There are horrors that humans inflict on other humans that just boggle the mind. The atrocities that happened during World War II were as bad as any known in history. Blitz is set during one of those times and highlights the disregard for human life that was all too common during that global conflict.

Even though The Blitz lasted a little over eight months, the indiscriminate nature of the bombs that fell on London during that time struck terror into the hearts of its citizens. The bombs indiscriminately killed men, women and children and the UK government began a program to send the children (sans parents) to points North for their safety.

Young George played by newcomer Elliott Heffernan is a precocious child from a mixed-race couple. The now single-parent mother Rita is played by Saoirse Ronan. They live in a flat along with her grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller). When the time comes for George to be sent away for his safety, Rita’s world turns upside down.

The matter-of-factness that director/writer Steve McQueen brings to the screen emphasizes the actions of the human participants and Ronan and Heffernan deliver. McQueen uses the human cost of the bombings to supercharge the emotions of normal people in harrowing times. These raw human emotions on full display make this film an unforgettable experience.

Thanks to Transmission Films we have five in-season passes to giveaway to Ammonite!

Led by powerful performances by Kate Winslet (The Dressmaker, Titanic) and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Brooklyn), Ammonite is set in1840s England. Acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning and a young woman sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever.

Directed and written by BAFTA nominee filmmaker Francis Lee, Ammonite is a follow up to Lee’s astounding debut, God’s Own Country.

In 1800s England, acclaimed but unrecognized fossil hunter Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) works alone on the rugged Southern coastline.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

With the days of her famed discoveries behind her, she now searches for common fossils to sell to tourists to support herself and her ailing mother. When a wealthy visitor entrusts Mary with the care of his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), she cannot afford to turn his offer down.

Proud and relentlessly passionate about her work, Mary initially clashes with her unwelcome guest, but despite the distance between their social class and personalities, an intense bond begins to develop, compelling the two women to determine the true nature of their relationship.

Ammonite will be released in Australian cinemas January 14!

All of the parts are in place for this generation’s version of Little Women. It’s got a talented and very now writer/director in Greta Gerwig (Ladybird) and an it girl in actress Saoirse Ronan as the lead sister Jo March. The rest of the cast includes some heavy hitters such as Meryl Streep, Laura Dean and the in vogue Timothée Chalamet.

Gerwig gives the film a contemporary feel with the liberal use of different timelines, yet offers few visual cues so it necessitates the need of the audience to pay close attention. She also plays on the actors strong points and minimises their lesser strengths. Although allowing Emma Watson’s occasional reversion to her English accent is an odd oversight.

Often considered the American equivalent of what Jane Austin offered the British readers, minus the sharp wit, Little Women highlights the frustrations and limitations that women faced on both sides of the pond. That in the time frame over fifty years after Austin’s stories were based still saw the same restrictions in the New World only spoke to the frustratingly slow progress that women of that period faced.

Life in the eighteen hundreds, especially during the US Civil War was much harsher than this version illustrates but its presentation of female empowerment is a timeless positive. It’s unrealistically idilic ending not withstanding, the ideas in the original book planted the seeds to fight for a more enlightened and necessary mindset. Unfortunately it’s a struggle that still exists today. Meaningful popular culture can shine a light on changes that need to be made and Little Women is illuminating.

For those that are outraged with the lack of historical accuracy or the artistic licences taken with this latest recounting of the tale between the two queens, get over it, it’s only a movie. As for its period-piece credentials, it might be more accurate visually than most.

There is a lack of opulence and bright colours that were probably closer to the reality of the times. This is a dark tale, set in dark surrounds, during a dark time. The sets and costumes also do an effective job of staying in this mindset.

The main women, Saoirse Ronan at her best as the luminous Mary Stuart and Margot Robbie as the severely portrayed Queen Elizabeth the First are the heroes here, while the men behind them play war mongering, cheats, liars and villains. The males in this storyline are very easy to despise.

This is a divisive film that some will love and others not but it’s one that is very much worth seeing to make up your own mind. Getting past its desire to play fast and loose with the truth is easy as its two main characters are so fascinating.

“Mary, Queen of Scots” explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry.

Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I. Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination.

Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty.

Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) is at an awkward age, not quite a child but not quite an adult yet either. She has strong opinion and isn’t afraid to voice them even if they are not always that well informed. You know typical teen stuff. Where the film veers from the typical is with its accurate assessment of those transitional years. It is refreshingly cliche free and it rings truer that most of the genre.

One of the film’s most remarkable traits is in how convincing and engaging its examination of even the simplest of teen moments are for the protagonists. When your brain is flush with raging chemicals at that age, even the most benign moment seems crucial.

These moments are played out with consummate cinematic skill. The film is also very unbiased with its characterisation and even the nuns at Lady’s Catholic High School and portrayed fairly and with humour. The film is a charming experience that feels heartfelt and real.
