Fitting in the Marvel Comics Universe between the films Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow provides a good deal of information about Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow’s back story. Scarlett Johansson is back in the tight leather and we get to drop and meet the family.

Sister Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), father Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), and mother Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) are there to provide the grounding for Natasha’s story. Pops Alexei is played mostly for comic effect as the Russian doppelganger of Steve Rogers, while sister and mother provide an emotional foundation.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The story involves a mad Russian named Drekov (Ray Winstone) and his plan to rule the world using brainwashed female sleeper agents. It is all gloriously devoid of common sense and makes for some absurdly fun escapist entertainment. Who doesn’t want to see ladies in snug apparel kick absolute butt and save the world at the same time?

Black Widow provides a great reason to get off the couch and make the effort to get back into a modern cinema. A place where the screen and sound are huge, the story ridiculously over the top, and the communal experience one that has been seriously missed. Give back a little to something that has given so much.

Completely successful at stripping away the stodgy veneer that plagues most period pieces featuring the British Monarchy, The Favourite strives to be anything but predictable and placid. Queen Anne (1665–1714) has never gotten the Hollywood love like other Queens and with a story this rich, it’s difficult to see why.

The filmmakers use quite a number of tricks to keep the viewer from falling into comfortable habits. The camera use features fisheye lenses to give a unique and somewhat distorted sense of proportion and the soundtrack is often times ominous and disjointed. The dialogue is razor sharp and filled with acid toned wit. It’s delivered with a delicious sense of controlled malevolence

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-9550766590923202" data-ad-slot="4069408586" data-ad-format="link"></ins>

The film also provides a chance to see three great female actors work at the height of their abilities. Olivia Colman as the Queen, Rachel Weisz and her life long friend and Emma Stone as the newest addition to the court are fantastic and the script gives them the support they need to really create something very special.

The accumulation of all this effort has quite a literal effect on you but it also sinks deep into your psyche. After the viewing, it demands further time and effort getting to know these eccentric and fascinating characters and finding out for yourself how much was fact and how much was fiction.

If love conquers all, then it’s got its work cut out for it in Disobedience. Distance, social acceptance and religious dogma are just three of the hurdles that must be overcome for the two main players to succeed in finding love together.

Ronit Krushka (Rachel Weisz) is a New York based photographer whose father’s untimely death draws her back home to England and the Hasidic community that she grew up in. She had become an outcast from behaviour that was unacceptable in the tightly controlled world of the faith and her homecoming is not a welcome one.

Upon arriving home, she stays with childhood friends Dovid Kuperman (Alessandro Nivola) and his wife Esti (Rachel McAdams). Her return is an uncomfortable one and it’s mostly left to the viewer to figure out why. When the father’s will is read and Ronit is not even mentioned, it rips open old wounds.

Religion is shown as the controlling entity that it can be and when David is challenged by Esti to believe in her happiness more that the religious hard line, there is a surprise waiting for the viewer. This is a slow paced film with a message that is told with subtle strokes of the brush.

Following his Academy Award® winning film, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, James Marsh directs the incredible true story of Donald Crowhurst (Academy Award® winner Colin Firth, THE KING’S SPEECH, KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, THE RAILWAY MAN), an amateur sailor who competed in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in the hope of becoming the first person in history to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping. With an unfinished boat and his business and house on the line, Donald leaves his wife, Clare (Academy Award ® winner Rachel Weisz, THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS, THE LOBSTER) and their children behind, hesitantly embarking on an adventure on his boat the Teignmouth Electron.
